The rain had cleared up the night before and the day was sunny, though cold. We bundled up in jackets and climbed into Tracy’s car.

Tracy explained that the apartment was located in a building just about a ten-minute drive from the inn. So, while my commute would be longer, it wouldn’t be awful.

We pulled up in front of a plain, four-story building, with tall trees lining every available space. The lobby was drab, with dim lighting and a sad-looking fern in the corner. Was this already a mistake?

We climbed up two flights of stairs, as the elevator was out of commission. Tracy promised me that it worked the majority of the time, and I pondered whether I could ever have an apartment where the elevator worked all of the time.

She knocked on the door to 2B and we were welcomed in by a man wearing ironed jeans and a tucked in, button-down shirt. I held in my irritation as I realized how much of a waste this trip was turning out to be. No way could someone in ironed jeans show me anything good.

All that was wiped from my brain as we shuffled into the apartment and stood in the living room.

The place had floor-to-ceiling windows against the far wall, which let in the dazzling morning light. Hardwood floors throughout, and the furniture was staged in a beautifully minimalist touch. Tall bookshelves were built into the side walls. Images of all the books I could buy flashed across my eyes.

We followed ironed jeans into the kitchen, which was larger than my bedroom in L.A., with gleaming appliances, a huge fridge, and a small dining nook in the corner, with a tall window looking out onto a backyard on the lower level.

The two bedrooms were spacious; the first was designed to look like an office, and I pictured all the inn business I could get done here. The second room was large enough to fit a king-size bed. I didn’t have the money for a king-size bed right now, but as I dreamt of all that space, I figured I could make it work. The two bathrooms were sleek, with gorgeous sinks and tubs. And the rent was perfect for what I could afford.

Back in the living room, Tracy looked up at me expectantly and I turned to the landlord.

“Where should I apply?” I asked him, and Chrissy squealed.

“I’m so happy you loved it!” Chrissy said as we shuffled down the stairs back to the lobby.

“I told you we’d find something great,” Tracy added.

“You’re right, you’re right, it’s perfect,” I told her. “I just hope I get it.” I’d filled out an application before we left, and the landlord promised he’d get back to me soon.

“Is there some party in my building, and no one invited me?” Nick stood at the mailboxes in the lobby, smiling.

“Simone is thinking about renting 2B,” Tracy told him.

Nick’s face lit up at those words. “Is that right?” he asked me. “I’m in 3B. I guess we’ll be neighbors.
