How do college admission officers view extracurricular activities within an application?

The core of your college application is comprised of your GPA, your standardized test scores, and your high school transcript. Taken together, these two statistics and one list of courses convey your capacity for seeking out and conquering academic challenges. But they don’t say very much about your personality or non-academic interests (though this may come through in your choice of electives, depending on what is available at your high school). That’s what admissions officers look for in your list of extracurricular activities. You want that list to show that you are engaged with the world outside the classroom, and that you are able to articulate how you spend your time.
