The cold rising from the bare floorboards brought her back to the moment and she turned away from the damp coats. In the living room she stood in front of the television, remote control in hand. Just a week ago Jo Cox had been shot and stabbed on the street. She’d never heard of Jo Cox before, but the murder of the MP had flicked a switch in Mara. The moment she’d heard the news, she’d felt vulnerable. The condescending voices of the referendum canvassers, the mild, implicit threats of the Leave campaigners suddenly had the power to reach Mara, make her curl away in shock. Jo Cox wasn’t a statistic like all the horrible stories she’d read about on her timeline: the slights at work, the insults when shopping, the shit through letter boxes. Jo Cox’s death made English nationalism real.

Mara switched on the telly, muting the sound and averting her eyes, not yet ready to face whatever information the screen might show. Through the window she could see it was already light, but so far the sun hadn’t shown itself. Grey cloud, mizzle. Drops of water settled on the glass, interfering with the mirrored image of the television, making the presenter cry. Even in the indistinct reflection of the picture she could see that he was trying hard to look like he knew what he was talking about. Her eyes were drawn to the red bar at the bottom of the screen, the words in the reflection ran backwards, a couple of blocks of colour showed the results.

All she had to do was turn around, look at the screen, compare those numbers and do the maths.

Then she’d know.
