Chapter 10

“I think I’m getting more jaded in my old age,” I said to the others. “There was a time, not that long ago, where I totally would have eaten up Chantelle’s story about how they fought, and now she was dealing with a number of hard feelings because her friend had died without her getting any closure first. But now? I wonder if Chantelle is just telling us all this to make herself appear less guilty. Maybe she really is dealing with complex feelings. Guilt around the fact that she killed her former best friend.”

“Wow, and here I thought I was the heartless and cruel one of the three of us,” Leanne teased.

“You are when compared to me,” Kaillie said. “I believe her. I can imagine everything she’s telling us being the truth. It all makes sense. It lines up with the conversation Rachel heard that was cut short. And with what Janice told us about them being friends until recently. I think if she was lying, some of it wouldn’t fit.”

“That’s a good point,” Leanne said. “Still, I don’t think we should rule her out entirely. She doesn’t have an alibi. I mean, not really. Given the time frame, Monica was probably shot ten, maybe fifteen minutes after Chantelle said she left and went to the grocery store. I know it’s only a few minutes’ walk away, but who looks at their watch that closely? I don’t think we can nail down the timeline one hundred percent. Chantelle could have shot Monica, then rushed to the grocery store to be seen in public, hoping that someone got the time wrong by ten minutes or so.”

“True,” Kaillie admitted. “Chantelle certainly had the opportunity, and the motive. And she says she doesn’t own a gun, but who knows if that’s true? Even if she doesn’t have one registered, this is America. They’re far from impossible to get.”

“Okay, so we won’t rule her out,” I said. “Still, I’m also not totally convinced she did do it.”

“Me either,” Leanne said. “The memorial might help us figure things out. I also thought it was interesting how she told us there was no way Sean would be the killer.”

“Right,” I agreed. “You would think that if she had killed Monica, she would immediately try and steer us in the direction of literally anyone else. Especially the guy who was known to be stalking Monica. I will say that’s certainly a point in her favor.”

“I also thought it was interesting the reasoning behind it. She said Sean wasn’t the type to try and plan a murder like that. But he was stalking Monica, so what if he knew she was in there?” Kaillie said. “He wouldn’t really have had to plan much. He could have just made the decision and gone in.”

“But then he would have had to walk past the office, where Janice would have heard him,” I pointed out.

“True. Okay, it’s still unlikely to be Sean. But not impossible.”

“Yeah,” I said. “I think
