CHAPTER NINE
Despite the intense craziness of the day before, I was actually able to sleep like a log, hoping that would give me a leg up on the sleuthing for the day. The bed in my room was as soft as a marshmallow. I stepped over to the window and parted the curtains to welcome the morning. The sun was front and center, promising a warm day. I glanced down at my outfit, hoping my sleeveless pink shirt, plaid skort, and my charcoal Converse were appropriate attire for our day, whatever that turned out to be. The clock on the wall quietly ticked to 6:55 a.m. Time to head downstairs.
Many of the rooms in the bed and breakfast reminded me more of a college dorm room than a resort. I expected that had to do with trying to make space for as many people as efficiently as possible. Truthfully, it had all of the amenities that I needed. The shared bathrooms were large enough to accommodate several guests at once, but still provide privacy. Given my normal schedule of early rising, I had the place to myself. With extra time on my hands I had poked around online to see if I could flesh out the story of Curtis and family any further. I was able to confirm their business did financially very well, despite quite a few customer complaints and claims. I guess if you were in a desperate situation, needing your car towed, youâd take what you could get.
Opening the door, I headed toward the lodge for breakfast. The spread the owners put out from the looks of the brochure could feed an army. With so much to do, I guess they wanted you fueled up to enjoy the experience. As I neared the first floor, I heard quiet mumbles, the early crowd just waking up.
Uncle Jack and Linda stood at a buffet table along a wall, getting coffee. We made eye contact, and Unkie nodded.
Joining them, I said, âGood morning.â
I would swear they were both glowing. Almost since the moment theyâd met, they had become inseparable. I stepped around them and grabbed a cup, filling it from the giant coffee pot. We made our way to three seats at a very long table. The room could probably hold about thirty people at a time for a meal. Several small tables surrounded the centerpiece. The room was starting to fill, but I had yet to see Justin.
I sipped the hot liquid, feeling it awaken my body. âWhatâs on the docket today?â I asked Unkie and Linda.
Uncle Jack deferred to Linda, who said, âI think weâre starting off with the cider making.â
âIt would be fun to know how to do it, and maybe we could make some at home,â Uncle Jack added.
Most everyone in the room began to take their seats, ready for the breakfast service. I swiveled my head, searching for Justin. Would I have to give him a wake-up call? While scanning the room, I also looked for any members of Curtisâs family.
