Lizabet Smakofani walked up to the Russian pickets before they knew she was there. They jumped as a unit when she spoke in Russian. “I am unarmed. I am—”

“The reporter!” one guard shouted. He lunged to grab her.

She thumbed the Russian in the throat and dropped him wheezing to his knees. She wheeled on his comrade. “You, tell me. Has Rutgers arrived?”

The man clutched his rifle uncertainly.

“You don’t remember me?”

The Russian blinked as he saw past the blue contact lenses and the long red hair extensions. “Da!” He grinned delightedly as he suddenly understood. “You were spying!”

“That’s right.” She nodded tolerantly. “Now why don’t you escort me into town so I don’t have to kick the shit out of anyone else.”

The guard fell into step, and they marched from the jungle picket toward the cleared no-man’s land surrounding the town. The guard shouted out the call sign and they marched through the barbed wire and sharpened stakes of the kill zone.

“Fetch a medic.” She broke off from the guard and walked
