We combed through briefs for most of the following day. It felt so natural having O curled up beside me, each of us commenting every so often on something we’d read. While the penthouse we were in wasn’t home for either of us, I could picture us living somewhere similar and this being the pattern of our lives. At least in between ops.

We didn’t hear from Typhon until late afternoon with the address of where we’d meet for dinner. I’d expected the onset of anxiety, but it never came. Like before, I reminded myself O was mine, not his.

We arrived at the restaurant early and positioned ourselves at the bar, where we could see Typhon and the others when they walked in. The practice was common with those in intelligence—station yourself as far back in the room as possible so no one is behind you, and of course, always be at your destination before anyone you’re meeting. Given Typhon, Verity, and Hornet were as experienced as we were, I was surprised they hadn’t beaten us here.

When the trio walked in, I was stunned by Typhon’s height. I shouldn’t have been, given I’d met his brother, but the man had to be over six-foot-five, maybe six-foot-seven. Hornet too. At six-two, I wasn’t short by any means. While both men clearly worked out daily, they had nothing on me in that respect.

“Hello, Verity,” I said, standing to cheek-kiss her. “Long time, no see,” I joked. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Typhon.” I reached out to shake his hand before greeting Hornet and introducing him to Oleander.

We followed the maître d’ into a private dining room, and once he closed the door behind him, I held out a chair for Oleander while Hornet did the same for Verity.

Right before I took my own seat, my mobile vibrated with a message from Cayman, asking me to ring him when I had the chance. “Excuse me,” I said, without explaining whom I’d received a message from. There was a terrace just outside the room where we sat, so I opened the doors and stepped outside.

“I should’ve told you it was nothing urgent,” Cayman began when he picked up the call.

“I heard you were on holiday. Is everything okay?”

“Couldn’t be better, my friend. I asked Bexli to marry me last night, and she said yes.”

“Ah, that’s wonderful news, Cay. I’m so happy for both of you.”

“We’re planning to hold the ceremony on the beach, here in Mallorca. And, Kai, I’d like you to be my best man.”

“No better place for a wedding, and I’m honored.”

“Good, good. It will be a quick engagement period. We’re planning to wed before Christmas.”

“Why wait?” I chuckled, knowing Cay had loved Bexli most of his life. “Please let me know the details and what I can do.”

“I will, my friend.” He hesitated for a moment, and I sensed he was choked up with emotion. “Listen, I don’t know if I would’ve had the guts to do this if you hadn’t given me that swift kick in the arse.
