Chapter Eight

Penelope was still feeling frustrated after leaving the police station, but she was also starting to feel hungry. After realizing she hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast, she decided to pick up some takeout to bring home where she could enjoy her dinner and regroup about how to best solve the case. It would be better than a microwaveable meal and maybe it would be the boost she needed to figure out some answers.

About half of the restaurants in town were closed. Since they made the bulk of their profit from the summer crowds, they spent the rest of the year in hibernation. There was a seafood restaurant that was open year-round that Penelope enjoyed and she decided that she would also order a treat for her cats while she was there. She would just make sure not to order them flounder because it always made her uncomfortable to serve her pets a meal with the same name as her youngest cat.

Her thoughts had been solely on getting dinner and not the case, so she was surprised when an opportunity presented itself to accomplish both tasks.

Deena Chambers was seated at a table finishing off a glass of wine as she pushed the final morsels of food around on her plate. Penelope was nervous about how the woman would respond to seeing her, but she decided this might be the best opportunity to approach her. Deena looked to be alone and maybe her drink would loosen her tongue.

“Hello,” Penelope said.

“You,” Deena responded as her eyes narrowed in recognition. “What are you doing here?”

Maybe tongue-loosening wasn’t a good thing in this instance. She hoped they wouldn’t cause a scene. Penelope really didn’t want to get banned from the restaurant that served the best crab cakes in town. However, she couldn’t back down now. She needed answers about Craig and his coworkers if Jared wasn’t going to question them.

“Buying dinner, but I’m pleased to get a chance to speak to you,” Penelope replied.

“And why is that? I don’t believe that story you told my niece. You want to plan a memorial for Craig? Why? You’re not being altruistic. You’re trying to cover yourself and protect your business. Well, people are worth more than business. I haven’t decided if we’re going to take legal action, but your bribes aren’t going to dissuade me. No way.”

Penelope bit her lip. She thought that was usually pretty good at reading people and figuring out what they wanted. The circumstances usually revolved around making sure a party properly represented what a client wanted from an event even if they couldn’t articulate it exactly at first. This situation was testing her belief in her ability. She had most likely taken a murderer on a tour of her building and had no idea then. She also wasn’t sure which of Craig’s coworkers should become her prime suspect. However, she thought she understood where Deena was coming from.

Penelope sat down across from her. Deena started waving for a waiter to come and give her the bill, but Penelope wasn’t dissuaded.
