Triad Triangulations

Cobra

“They are just up ahead. Pull over.” I called from the back of the van to Azmodeus behind the wheel. “Head into the Arby’s, take us through the drive-through, and then park right next to the exit.”

“Sure thing,” he nodded and turned to the other guys in the van, “what do you guys want?”

I didn’t answer. My attention turned back to the bank of screens in front of me. Only one of the six held any importance at this exact moment, though I worked feverishly on one of the other five to get us more information.

After remaining in San Jose for almost 48 hours without leaving, the Triad finally moved from their warehouse. Two SUVs were currently parked up the street, just outside a Mexican restaurant. If Mr. Gao and his men just had a hankering for some tacos, I was going to be ticked off, and I wasn’t alone in that feeling.

My surveillance team on the Triads went above and beyond. Always important to hire competent people. They got close enough to the vehicles our competition used to give us an edge. I didn’t want them to risk putting a tracker on them, but knowing their make and model, I only needed the VIN numbers to follow them. Well, the VIN numbers and my hacking skills.

It was the Triad’s fault, really. They only drove the newest vehicles, the ones that were more computer than gas guzzling internal combustion engines. If they had taken a page out of the cartel’s playbook, at least the street-level thugs with their classical low riders, I’d never be able to track them with just a VIN.

The moment two of their vehicles left the compound, I rounded up a squad, quartet really. It was a surveillance mission, so we didn’t need all hands on deck… at least I hoped. If I hadn’t hired Conrad Wraith and his team, it would’ve been just Azmodeus and me.

It was child’s play to use the VIN number to gain access to a vehicle's location, at least ones equipped with an onboard Communications System. Those computers were designed to do just that, after all. The systems that control that aspect of the vehicle were not as well protected as the other computer-controlled parts.

While my team debated just what was in a Jamocha shake, I worked at cracking into a few of those other systems. With no eye in the sky, though I had a drone charged and ready, I only had the tracking information and line of sight to try to determine exactly what the Triad was up to. Once I got access to the audio and video feeds from their cars, we would not be flying so blindly.

A few minutes later, after everyone else had gotten their meals, we pulled into a spot right near the exit. From here, we’d be able to get back on the road quickly should the Triad take off. I stood up from my chair and opened the back door to the van. All four blades on the quadcopter drone I tossed out the door buzzed to life.
