Chapter 19

Watching Yeltson’s emotions, Amelia couldn’t hide her own. His vacillated between hurt, confusion, anger, fear, and prejudice. That’s what she had feared most, if he ever learned what she was. The prejudice that came with Cardorian’s view of essencers couldn’t be hidden or easily resolved. The government had ordered all people capable of manipulating the essences even in the slightest degree to be registered with the Magical Affairs Commission. Had she refused, they would never have allowed her inside their borders.

That wasn’t the only thing. Petor was alive. Alive! How in the essences had that come to be? He had fallen from a tower with an axe in his shoulder and through a foot of frozen ice. Yet they had never recovered his body. Earl Steamelt had gone in after him, but had been too late. The earl’s rescue attempt had nearly cost his own life and they had done everything they could to resuscitate him.

Somehow, Petor had survived the axe, the fall, the ice, the frigid waters—and he bore the scars to show it.

Petor had tried to kill her and Evalyne. And Yeltson. Raynt had gone after Petor and hadn’t been seen since.

Petor, my love. Petor, my would-be murderer.

Yeltson remained seated with those cold blue eyes and the ever-altering emotions. How she longed for the kinder eyes with all their sensitivity.

Amelia realized she was holding her breath and exhaled swiftly.

“Please say something,” she whispered.

Evalyne squeezed her hand. Precious Evalyne, who’s in as much shock as me. Her brother had tried to kill her after supposedly being dead for so long. Where had he been, and how had he lived for the past seven years?

Seven years and two months, her thoughts chided her.

That was a long time to go thinking your beloved was dead when he was not.

“Yeltson…”

“He tried to kill you, Amelia,” Yeltson said quietly, echoing her own thoughts. “Both of you. And me.”

Amelia felt her muscles relax just a little. “Yes, I know. We thought he was dead. Yeltson, I saw him take an axe to the shoulder and fall out a tower window.”

“But they never found his body,” Evalyne whispered, shivering at unseen cold wind. “Why would he try to hurt me? We were so close.”

Leaning over to rest one elbow on a knee, Yeltson looked as though he listened intently. His eyes were keen. Like he’s in a diplomatic session, Amelia realized.

Finally, Yeltson spoke again. “He’s hunting my father.”

“Your father?”

Yeltson nodded grimly. “Guess this has become a family affair.”

“Why is Petor hunting your father?” Amelia asked. With a squeeze of Eva’s hand and the balance of the counter, she rose to her feet. “What’s going on?”

Yeltson looked away. “Did Raynt read you in?”

“‘Read me in’?” Amelia shook her head. Sometimes, the phrases Cardorians chose were just incomprehensible. “The only reading material he gave was a guest list for tonight’s dinner.”

Yeltson chuckled. “No, did he tell you about what we’ve been doing?”

Amelia’s heart thudded in her chest, over and over. A thousand other things flew through
