In silence, we followed Artemis up and out of the basement. Serena and Noah flanked my sides as we made our way through the lobby and out the front door. There was a chill in the air and I was grateful to have a thick, warm sweater on to protect me from the frigid evening temperature. I hadn’t expected any of this, and I sort of wanted to question either Artemis or the Council itself about what they were, who they were, what they did, and how come I had never heard of them up until this point. However, I knew that now wasn’t the time for that.
We traversed along the path that led to the half-circle rock, where we discovered Mathias leaning against the structure with his arms drawn across his chest. He wasn’t dressed warmly and appeared to be shivering. I glanced around at the rest of the Clan members and the Council — the Councilmen and women were all dressed in thick robes that I imagined must have kept them comfortable and warm, while my parents and aunt were dressed in light-weather clothing as climate and temperature had no effect on them. Serena had her sweater, Noah had on a hoodie and a beanie, Chloe wore a thick coat, and Iris was wearing a long-sleeved shirt that didn’t look warm enough, but she didn’t appear to be complaining.
Then there was Alan. He wasn’t wearing anything to protect him from the cold, just like my parents and Hannah. But unlike them, he wasn’t undead. He wasn’t cold to the touch. He was warm and very much alive. Him being a werewolf wasn’t something I was going to easily get used to and I didn’t like anything that reminded me of that fact.
“I can feel the essence of magic radiating from this site even from here,” the red-haired Councilwoman commented, a look of exhilaration on her freckled face. “This place is a strong source of energy, Castus Arundale. You have a treasure here, did you know?”
I almost stopped in my track when I heard her say Artemis’s title rather than his name, but I supposed it was normal, as she was of higher rank than him.
“It certainly is a treasure, Councilwoman Day,” Artemis replied.
“Quite suitable for opening a portal,” the russet-skinned Councilman said.
“Indeed. It is rather remarkable,” Councilman McLaughlin commented. “How have we not heard of it before? Why would you keep it from us?”
“We have, Ray,” the other male Councilman said, rolling his eyes behind his glasses. “It’s noted to be one of the few places with the highest amounts of magical essence. You have heard of it before. The Circle of Unitas. One of the oldest, in the west, at least.”
“It isn’t a circle,” Noah pointed out. “It’s only half a circle.”
“Indeed,” the bespectacled man agreed. “It was once a full circle, an impenetrable force that held unimaginable amounts of power. This was once a place of unity, back before Mangor disrupted the bond between Castus and Nefastus witches and shattered the other half,” he explained.
