Chapter Fifteen

After another half-hour of watching and waiting, the twins wandered through the maze of weapon exhibits to find Johnny beside the refreshments table. He jammed a prosciutto roll into his mouth, grimaced, and snatched a napkin up to spit it out again. “That ain’t meat. It’s meat-flavored paper. Have y’all ever had one of these?”

Clint shook his head as Johnny tossed the wadded napkin into the trash.

“We might have hit a homerun, Johnny,” Brandon said. “We picked up some conversation.”

“Uh-huh. Let’s hear it.”

“Um…” The wizard borg glanced around and lowered his head toward him. “Even if we could play it back without Margo, I don’t think this is the right place—”

“No, tell me.”

“Oh. Right.” He glanced at his brother and elbowed him in the side.

With a frown, Clint raised a finger for them to wait. His eyelids fluttered and all expression disappeared from his face. “I know they jacked the price up but I still want to talk to these assholes and give them a piece of my mind. Then we’ll get the hell out of here. The rest of this is like a toy store in comparison. Amateurs.”

His eyelids fluttered again before he looked from Johnny to Leroy with a shrug.

“Yeah, that sounds about right.” The bounty hunter tugged his beard thoughtfully. “Did you find out who said it?”

The twins shook their heads in unison. “We picked it up through the noise.”

“Sure. Okay. We’ll find ʼem.”

“I think we might have already.” Leroy nodded to where June scowled at a man in dress slacks and a long black peacoat who leered at her with a hungry grin as he passed. She looked away from him and raised her chin as if she were objectified like this all the time and had simply become used to it. The man slipped into the staff room with two bulky-looking bodyguards at his side and the door closed behind them.

The Crystal turned her head slowly to look at Johnny and the others beside the refreshment table and raised an eyebrow.

“That’s what we’ve been waitin’ for.” The bounty hunter nudged Leroy’s other arm—which didn’t emit a metallic thump beneath the illusion—and strode across the ballroom. “Tell her to not go bustin’ in there on her own first, huh?”

“She knows.” Leroy cast a sly glance at the food on the table, shook his head, and hurried after the others.

Everyone else ignored them as Johnny and his team of two East Coast gentlemen, the pencil-pusher, and the bombshell blonde moved toward the staff door.

“All right. Y’all let me do the talkin’. And keep the damn illusions on, huh? I ain’t fixin’ to get to the point where we gotta use force for this one but if it happens, it’s best we don’t give folks a way to recognize cyborgs blowin’ up the Unified Tech Con. Got it?”

Leroy turned to scan the ballroom for anyone who might be watching them—like a natural-born bodyguard—and the dwarf jerked the door open. The twins and June followed him quickly before Leroy slipped inside.
