Chapter 12

As she made her way back into town, Angela marinated over everything she had learned. On the one hand, she wanted nothing more than to believe what Laura had told her. After all, she had heard the same thing from multiple people by this point. The relationship between Seth and Laura had been nothing more than two childhood friends who were trying to explore something that they quickly discovered was better off left alone.

The only problem was that it also seemed much too fabricated. In Angela’s experience, these things were rarely ever that simple. She didn’t think that anyone who had given her information up to this point had lied exactly, but perhaps they were leaving out a few details. The question now was whether those details were pertinent to the case,

She turned down the street that led to her PI office, fully intending to do another deep dive into both Seth and Laura’s social media and make sure she left no stone unturned. As she was about to pull into the parking lot, her phone rang, and Chief Helbar’s name flashed across the screen. Ruff barked and nudged it toward her with his nose, which made her laugh as she accepted the call and held it to her ear.

“Hey, Chief. I’m just getting back from Harmony Acres. What’s up?”

“Harmony Acres?” the surprise in his voice was unmistakable as it crackled through the phone. “What were you doing there?”

Angela sat back in the driver’s seat and rested her free hand against the steering wheel. “Following up on a hunch,” she answered. “It didn’t exactly lead where I hoped, but it gave me something else to look into regarding Seth’s crash.”

“You have a new lead on the culprit? Kim said nothing came back from the fingerprints.”

Angela hummed and ran a hand through her hair. “It’s too soon to say, but I’ll let you know as soon as I find something. For now, what’s up?”

“Please do,” the chief said. “In the meantime, the water plant finally sent over the security footage from the past couple of weeks. We’ve been going through it and there’s something I think you should see.” Angela raised her brows and immediately put the car back in gear. “I’ll be right there.”

She arrived at the station fifteen minutes later and sat between Officer Dell and Officer Townsend as they pulled up the footage on one of the larger screens. Kim hit a few keys, and they played the footage at double speed. For most of the duration, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Until one night around 10:33, roughly three days ago.

“Wait, slow down that clip.”

Officer Townsend grinned as he did what Angela asked and played the clip at half speed. It showed most of the employees meandering away from the main floor and discarding their brightly colored vests in their designated area before heading to the main desk to clock out.

All except for a young woman with blonde hair cropped just above her shoulders, freckled cheeks, and brown eyes.
