Ten long minutes passed in silence. The car smelled of smoke and air freshener. Jesse noticed the red pine tree freshener hanging from the rearview mirror just above an open ashtray that had cigarettes spilling out of it. Mystery solved, he thought.
“Nice car,” he said, looking around. It was a Cutlass from the ’80s. One that had been kept in pretty good condition with an obviously souped-up engine. The large man looked over at Jesse. He held a look that no doubt scared most people he ran into day in and day out. At the post office mailing a letter or in line at a grocery store. There was no doubt he brought fear to the average guy, but Jesse wasn’t average. He’d spent his fair share of time in dark alleyways when he was younger, and he knew what made guys like this tick.
“Where’s Ernie?”
The man kept one paw on the wheel and one on the stick shift. His lips moved only to puff on a cigarette. Jesse imagined Robbie in his place. As Ernie’s muscle, he’d had the ability to look pretty scary, too. Jesse wondered how many guys had held this position at Ernie’s side. And how many had been left to rot in prison the way Ernie had left Robbie.
Jesse grew more and more frustrated about the entire situation. He was supposed to be meeting Charlie or Ernie, not this rocks-for a-brain giant who appeared to be mute. “Listen, if you don’t tell me where the hell we’re going, then you may as well pull over and let me out. I’m done playing games with you.”
“We’ll be there,” the man growled.
“This better not be a setup. I’m in no mood for any crap.”
The man didn’t look at him, but Jesse saw a slight smile appear at the corner of his mouth. Jesse stood six feet tall and weighed in at one hundred and ninety pounds. He knew how to handle himself. Even with guys like this who outweighed him by at least fifty pounds.
Another twenty minutes passed before the man said, “We’re here.”
Another dark street on a side of town with which Jesse was unfamiliar. Tall apartment buildings and parked cars lined both sides of the street. The man slowed down and turned into a dark alley. Nothing but a few garbage cans and boxes occupied the area.
Jesse grew nervous at the thought of meeting with Charlie. He had no idea how he’d react to Jesse finding him, and a part of him wondered if Charlie would be upset or mad at being found.
“Get out.”
Jesse looked around and popped open the creaky door, careful not to hit the building. “Now what?” He shut the door and took a few steps forward.
The man opened his glove box and removed some stuff that Jesse couldn’t make out. He tucked the items into his jacket pocket and got out of the car. “I’ll need to go inside first to make sure everything is cool. Then I’ll signal you to come up.
