Chapter 9
âThere was a very famous family known for their ability to transport large groups of people over open water.â
The minor clone stopped crying and smiled. âThat sounds like just the ticket. Weâll be transporting a large group of people through the ocean of space. What are the names?â
Lizzie displayed them on her screen. âAs you can see there are quite a number.â She lowered her voice and dimmed the cabin lights. âWould you care to read them off for me, Reggie?â she said in her sultriest voice.
âJust crank up the lights again, could you Liz?â he asked. âGreat. Thanks. Okay, weâve got Babbitt, Bache, Badger, Bainbridge...â As soon as Reggie listed the names, most were snapped up by the minor clones.
However, the first minor clone was still undecided. He put his hands on his hips. âDo you have anything that starts with a âJâ? Iâm feeling very J, I think.â
Reggie rapidly scrolled through the alphabetical listing. âJeffers?â he asked.
âI like it!â said Jeffers.
Kilroy walked over to the group. âAlthough we didnât have a meeting the cat will no longer have her diet of aliens to be eating, so I have a hunch that our priority now is to stop Reggie from being Puckieâs lunch! Of course now that everyoneâs here, we want to fire up this ship and clear Kimmyâs atmosphere!â
âYo. Is everyone just going to continue to ignore me?â
The group turned as one and saw Humphrey.
âItâs not ignoring so much, as perhaps not observing,â said Babbitt.
âNo, itâs ignoring,â said Jeffers.
âDefinitely ignoring,â said Bainbridge.
âHe may not be a clone, but heâs human! We should really include him in our group.â Reggie suddenly blushed at the terrible faux pas he just made. He bent down and kissed the screen. âSorry Lizzie,â he said tenderly.
Lizzie was quite emotional. âOh, I am not talking to you. You can just sleep on the couch tonight for all I care!â
The intercom speaker by Will buzzed.
âWas that right?â Lizzie whispered. âI tried to get the right inflection in my voice to let Reggie know I was angry.â
âI think it came across just fine.â Will looked over at Reggie happily tapping on his turtleâs shell and giggling. âMind you, Reggie might not understand the whole sleeping on the couch reference what with you being a computer and him a small human, who might actually sleep on a loofah sponge tonight.â
Kilroy, the rhyming clone overheard the discussion and offered a new poem.
âI imagine it might be like sleeping on a memory foam mattress, but I donât know if heâs going to sleep tonight, he looks like heâs more into acrobatics.â
And indeed Reggie was currently practicing a handstand on the back of turtle.
âHave I been mad at him the appropriate length of time?â Lizzie asked Will.
Will saw Reggie do a flip off the turtle and smoke his landing on Lizzieâs main console. âOh for sure,â said Will encouragingly as he winked at the poet, âI think Reggieâs learned his lesson about, um...what was he supposed to learn a
