CHAPTER 35
Northern Chateau Parish
Mallory Tuttle pushed through the crowd on her way to the door of the barroom. Lou Baker was right on her heels. When they reached the crowded sidewalk, he glanced at her and grinned.
âWhatâs the matter? Youâre not having fun?â
âI didnât like going to bars when I was young and cool,â she said with a grunt. She pointed down the block. âThatâs the last one. If the girls didnât go there last night, then they mustâve gone out of town.â
Mallory watched as Louâs face twisted into a long scowl.
âIf they got the drugs from another jurisdiction, does that mean weâll need to turn the case over?â
âNot necessarily, but itâll definitely complicate things.â Just as the words left Malloryâs mouth, she quickly reached out with her hands in a blocking motion. A young man had thrown an empty beer can at his friend and was turning to run away when he found himself face-to-face with Mallory. She had foreseen it happening and planted her back foot. When her outstretched arms caught him across the chest, he was stopped dead in his tracks.
âWhoa,â he said as he bounced off of her. He righted himself and took another look, starting at her feet and moving his eyes upward. They stopped and rested on her breasts for a long moment. He finally blinked and then looked up at her face. âDamn, lady, youâre strong.â
Mallory started to tell him to pick up his litter and watch where he was going before he got hurt, but then thought better of it. Most of the people sheâd tried to talk to in the other bars werenât interested in chatting with a stranger who looked more like a cop than a college student, so they hadnât gotten far in trying to identify the boy in the picture with Renee.
âWell, youâre pretty strong yourself,â Mallory said coyly, reaching up to squeeze his soft arm. âDo you lift?â
Puffing out his chest, the boy nodded. âYeah, I hit the gym when I can. You know, when Iâm not studying for med school.â
âOh, wow, med school?â Mallory feigned interest. âYou must be pretty smart, as well as strong.â
He smiled. âI do okay.â
âYeah, I have a friend of mine studying for med school, but I canât seem to hook up with her.â Mallory put her hands on her hips and shook her head. âI tell you, Iâve been to every bar, but I canât find her anywhere. She told me sheâd be here by nine oâclock.â
The boy furrowed his brow. âWhatâs her name?â
âRenee. Sheâs a tall brunette. You would probably like her. I know she would like you.â
âWhatâs she look like?â
âI told you,â Mallory said, slapping his arm playfully. âSheâs a tall brunette.â
It was obvious the boy was inebriated, so his guard wasnât up at all. As expected, he was the one who asked to see a picture of Renee. All evening, whenever Mallory would whip out her phone to ask someone if they knew the girls, people would scatter. No one wanted to be a witness to anything other than who was buying the next round of drinks.
