CHAPTER 35

Northern Chateau Parish

Mallory Tuttle pushed through the crowd on her way to the door of the barroom. Lou Baker was right on her heels. When they reached the crowded sidewalk, he glanced at her and grinned.

“What’s the matter? You’re not having fun?”

“I didn’t like going to bars when I was young and cool,” she said with a grunt. She pointed down the block. “That’s the last one. If the girls didn’t go there last night, then they must’ve gone out of town.”

Mallory watched as Lou’s face twisted into a long scowl.

“If they got the drugs from another jurisdiction, does that mean we’ll need to turn the case over?”

“Not necessarily, but it’ll definitely complicate things.” Just as the words left Mallory’s mouth, she quickly reached out with her hands in a blocking motion. A young man had thrown an empty beer can at his friend and was turning to run away when he found himself face-to-face with Mallory. She had foreseen it happening and planted her back foot. When her outstretched arms caught him across the chest, he was stopped dead in his tracks.

“Whoa,” he said as he bounced off of her. He righted himself and took another look, starting at her feet and moving his eyes upward. They stopped and rested on her breasts for a long moment. He finally blinked and then looked up at her face. “Damn, lady, you’re strong.”

Mallory started to tell him to pick up his litter and watch where he was going before he got hurt, but then thought better of it. Most of the people she’d tried to talk to in the other bars weren’t interested in chatting with a stranger who looked more like a cop than a college student, so they hadn’t gotten far in trying to identify the boy in the picture with Renee.

“Well, you’re pretty strong yourself,” Mallory said coyly, reaching up to squeeze his soft arm. “Do you lift?”

Puffing out his chest, the boy nodded. “Yeah, I hit the gym when I can. You know, when I’m not studying for med school.”

“Oh, wow, med school?” Mallory feigned interest. “You must be pretty smart, as well as strong.”

He smiled. “I do okay.”

“Yeah, I have a friend of mine studying for med school, but I can’t seem to hook up with her.” Mallory put her hands on her hips and shook her head. “I tell you, I’ve been to every bar, but I can’t find her anywhere. She told me she’d be here by nine o’clock.”

The boy furrowed his brow. “What’s her name?”

“Renee. She’s a tall brunette. You would probably like her. I know she would like you.”

“What’s she look like?”

“I told you,” Mallory said, slapping his arm playfully. “She’s a tall brunette.”

It was obvious the boy was inebriated, so his guard wasn’t up at all. As expected, he was the one who asked to see a picture of Renee. All evening, whenever Mallory would whip out her phone to ask someone if they knew the girls, people would scatter. No one wanted to be a witness to anything other than who was buying the next round of drinks.
