Lasker, like Tal after him, trusted in his own madness. He decides that now is not the time to make a plea for fiscal sanity and offers another pawn. He would also be busted after 23.♗d3 d5.

23…d5?!

This move attempts to subvert the problem, while ignoring the second, which is that now White pries open the g-file.

Steinitz plays on the principle: Counter in the center when assaulted on the wing. However, this move, which follows the law, loses a good chunk of Black’s advantage. Sometimes principles should be deliberately rejected. It’s understandable that for practical reasons, Steinitz rejected the long, yet much stronger continuation 23…hxg6! 24.h5 g5 25.h6 d5 26.hxg7 ♘g6 27.♗d3 ♘h4! 28.♕d1 ♔xg7 29.♕h5 ♖h8 30.♖xf7+ ♕xf7 31.♕xg5+ ♘g6 32.♖xh8 ♖e1+ 33.♔d2 ♕f2+ 34.♔c3 ♔xh8! 35.♕xg6 ♖e7! and Black will consolidate.

24.gxh7+ ♔xh7 25.♗d3+ ♔g8 26.h5 ♖e8 27.h6 g6

Black’s beautiful h8-knight now has access to zero squares!

28.h7+ ♔g7 29.♔b1 ♕e5 30.a3 c5!

Finally the counterattack begins as Black begins to push his queenside majority.

31.♕f2 c4?!

Correct was 31…f5!.

32.♕h4!

With a sneaky threat on h6.

32…f6

32…cxd3?? 33.♕h6#.
