Entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics

Entropy is a measure of disorder, and carries the units of J/K.

Entropy is a state function. The change in entropy of a reaction (ΔS) is the difference between the entropy contained in the products and the entropy contained in the reactants. ΔS° FOR A REACTION (SYSTEM)

ΔS° = Σ S° (products)– ΣS° (reactants)

The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of the universe increases during a spontaneous reaction.

The change in entropy of the universe is defined as the ΔS of the system (or the reaction) + the ΔS of the surroundings.
