CHAPTER TWENTY

Lyssa rushed through the corridor, kicking open each door and finding no gangsters or traps. She’d been half-convinced an army of bark wolves would rush out of a closet to swarm her. All the shards on display were impressive.

The gangsters’ lack of restraint had brought the Society down on them, but now that Lyssa was there, she believed they were, if anything, being cautious for men with so many weapons. They could have launched a major operation with all the shards available, deadly tools routed to them with the help of Nektarios.

Maybe that was the point. Her team’s assault might have preempted something far worse than a single dead Torch.

“As long as this doesn’t end with a war construct,” she began, “I’m still doing better than I was on Last Remnant.”

“Do you think a war construct is a concern?” Jofi asked.

“I don’t know what to think. It’s not like I wasn’t told they’d have a lot of shards, but this is intense. At least they can’t use their lightning shard inside.”

“Are you sure about that? There’s nothing I can do to help you if they disrupt your regalia. Also, such a spell might interfere with my ability to enhance your guns.”

“I’m sure,” Lyssa replied firmly. “They would have if they could. They wouldn’t sacrifice most of their men to make a point.”

Lyssa slowed as she reached a turn. After the annihilation of their force at the front of the building and the death of the buff yakuza, a good chunk of the background sorcery she’d been feeling had receded. With all their fancy shards, these men weren’t Sorcerers, and the building wasn’t covered with the wards and other protective spells one would expect when dealing with rogues.

Though Lyssa’s wounds ached, the herbs had dulled the pain. However, her thoughts didn’t come as easily as they should. It was as she told the men; everything had costs and trade-offs.

Without any way to communicate with Yui and Hideo, she would have to trust their skills and hope that if she couldn’t find the boss, she’d at least push him in their direction. She didn’t care about personal glory as long as they completed the mission.

The Far One had threatened the world for far too long. She needed to end his last twisted vestige of influence.

She understood that didn’t mean peace would reign over the world. There were plenty of ambitious and cruel men like the soldiers of the Ishikawa-kai who were willing to hurt others. The work of Torches and Eclipses would never be over. A subtle corruption dwelled in the hearts of all humans, Shadow and Illuminated.

That didn’t make her mission pointless. Stopping the Far One cut down on the monthly risk of a city disappearing.

Lyssa tore down the next hall, then slowed to a stop, recalling the blueprints through the haze of her thoughts. She looked around. Her cloudy mind wouldn’t seize on the problem poking the edges of her mind.

Her breath caught. There was a large central room on the blueprints, but where she stood, there were no doors on that side of the hallway.
