Chapter Twenty-Two
Galen flew over Cranbook as the town came to life. Despite having a university, it could feel sleepy before eight in the morningâalthough shouting crowds had a way of disturbing the early-morning peace.
âWhat the heck is this?â he demanded.
âI told them to call me if anything went wrong. I think this qualifies,â Vala said and gestured to the assembled group of ornery dwarves.
She had told him to head to the site of the second disk that had opened in the alley. That was the first one she had been able to contain. The portal was still there, clearly visible from above. It looked like a puddle of ink hungry for light or like something from a cartoon. The phrase âthereâs a hole in my pocketâ came to his mind unbidden but that made it sound like this was a fun little mystery to be solved. He didnât think there was anything funny about the crowd that stood only a few yards away from the artifact.
The dragon spiraled toward the earth with Vala on his back. As he descended, the voices of the crowd rose to his ears.
âMagic Makes Mayhem!â Clap, clap, clap-clap-clap. âMagic Makes Mayhem!â Clap, clap, clap-clap-clap. They chanted in unison, their voices loud and with an aggressive edge.
This close, it was evident that the protesting dwarves were not content to be heard and seen in the local news. They were actively shoving against the police line. The four officers at the entrance to the alley had not given any ground yet but they were outnumbered by more than two to one.
âI think thatâs Roy,â Vala said and pointed to a dwarf with a megaphone who stood a few feet behind the others while they tried to shove the police back. He faced the rest of the crowd, a confused-looking group of onlookers who didnât seem at all certain of whether they should join in, stand witness, or get out of there.
Between Roy and the police were about ten dwarves. None of them appeared to be armed. Galen saw no guns, hammers, or axes, which he counted as a good thing. The police werenât in riot gear either and werenât attacking the unarmed protesters. But that could all change in a heartbeat. Dwarves were stalwart creatures. Bricks, street signs, or car parts could become weapons in their hands much faster than they could in the hands of regular humans.
âWhat do you want me to do?â he asked his partner.
âWe canât let them overwhelm the police. I donât know whatâll happen if one of them touches that disk but I donât think it would be good for them.â
âI donât think itâd be good for anyone,â he agreed.
âBut we shouldnât start a fight either.â
âDragon scare tactics?â he suggested.
âSure.â Vala sighed.
Galen grinned as he flew between the shoving dwarves and the sun, which still hung low in the sky. His shadow eclipsed it and had the desired effect. Years of being taught that dragons might invade and that they needed to
