Katie sat down at her garden table, a fresh cup of tea in one hand, and Biscuit curling up in front of the other. She gazed up at the trees as a pair of red and yellow leaves fluttered down on the patio.

"I've been thinking about those aura spells I cast on Lydia and Jonathan,” she finally said. “Lydia's gave me a splitting headache, and Jonathan's had that creepy entity thing."

“They both gave you splitting headaches, if your immediately attacking the bottle of medicine upon your arrival home is any indication.” Biscuit’s tail twitched slowly.

"Okay, point taken. If this keeps up, I’ll have to buy the large economy size.” She frowned. “Still, I can't help but wonder what would happen if I tried it on Henry and Olivia since I forgot to do that."

Biscuit's whiskers twitched as he considered her words. "You know, casting those spells now after the memorial service and when emotions are high, can be risky. Are you sure you want to do it?"

Katie sighed as she watched a few more leaves tumble down on the table. "I know it's a risk, but I have to find out what's going on. With that entity turning up again, there must be some connection between Victoria’s murder and Joey Frontenac’s, and that poker game.”

"True," Biscuit conceded while he stretched languidly. "But you need to be prepared for whatever may come from casting those spells. It could lead us closer to solving the case, or it could put us in even more danger."

"I understand," Katie replied firmly. “But if I’m going to help Tom, I don’t see that I have much of a choice.”

"Very well," Biscuit said, his voice tinged with admiration. “The question is, what secrets was Victoria hiding?”

“She was pretty good at the whole hiding business,” Katie mused while her fingers tapped rhythmically on the table as she glanced at Biscuit.

"Only one place to look," Biscuit replied, his tail flicking about lazily. "Her studio."

"Right," Katie agreed. "But we'll have to be careful. Breaking and entering isn't exactly my strong suit."

"Ah, but it's your final exam for that nifty lock-picking spell you've been working on," Biscuit reminded her with a smug grin.

"Okay," Katie whispered. She took a deep breath. "Let's go. At least I’m not trying to break into a jail or anything."

Katie checked her phone for the address to Victoria’s studio, a place on 5th Avenue, not too far from Alice’s Mocha. Biscuit hopped into the backpack, and ten minutes later, they were staring through a locked gate at one of the rare garages in Park Slope.

“Two locks for the price of one, probably,” Biscuit said as he poked his head out to see the situation. “I’ll definitely be playing lookout.”

“Good thing the sun’s gone down.” Katie let out a heavy breath as she prepared to cast the spell. The gate loomed before them, an imposing obstacle between them and the answers they sought.

"Piece of cake," Katie murmured, her heart racing as she raised her hand towards the lock.
