Chapter Eighteen

In an attempt to ignore the part of him hurt by Riley’s casual rejection of his concern, Bennett threw himself into work, including the missing women who were also wolves. While he’d promised Henry that he’d stay out of pack business, he’d still pulled the available information about Libby Green, Jenny Moretz, and Sage Jones, though it admittedly didn’t give him much. None of the three had a criminal record, but there were fingerprints on file from jobs over the years; however, none of that proved useful so he’d gone a step further to run a search for anyone matching their descriptions only to come up with a non-existent list.

Anytime he wasn’t on a call or in the field, he looked for clues to what had happened and kept his ears peeled for anyone else to mention missing girls. Only one other incident had occurred, and he’d noticed how quickly Mendoza swept in then ushered the woman out and returned shortly without her, busily typing away on his phone as rain dripped around him.

On a hunch, Bennett chose that moment to go to the bathroom, crossing behind the other officer to catch a glimpse of his phone. The wolf head emoji followed by an explicit word gave him a guess who received the message, though he didn’t have a chance to read the actual exchange without drawing attention to himself. He detoured away from the bathroom to sneak out but couldn’t spot the woman, and he didn’t want to raise questions about a lengthy absence or how he’d gotten rained on so he turned away.

Henry blocked his path back inside, arms folded, and not giving an inch to let him back into the station. His normally calm expression was twisted into a scowl as he towered over him..

“You said you’d leave it alone,” he said, narrowing his eyes in an almost threatening way. “You’re damn lucky Mendoza isn’t paying better attention.”

Instead of arguing, Bennett met the narrowed eyes head-on. “Is there another one?”

The silence stretched before Henry admitted, “We’re up to five. All purebred females in their early 20s who are supposedly away on pack business.”

“But you don’t buy it,” he guessed.

“You’re making it hard to protect you, Ben.”

“Because I’m doing my job?” he asked, aware that arguing with a werewolf might not be the best choice. Alternatively, he hated having to look the other way. “This is what I was hired for, Henry.”

Henry’s scowl deepened. “No, you were hired to protect humans,” he said with an emphasis on the last word. “Anything that happens in werewolf territory or involving wolves is outside your reach, and the sooner you understand that, the better. I know we’re still on for the next two hours, but the sheriff suggested you might want to have an early night.”

Bennett wanted to argue except a glance beyond Henry’s shoulder found a lot of eyes on them, including the sheriff, and none looked friendly. He caught an outright scowl from Mendoza who’d apparently finished his text then said, “Fine, but if the wolves were handling it well, the number wouldn’t be rising.
