Chapter 14

A few days passed, and Julie and Cindy came over for a visit. It was a sunny day, and we took advantage of it by sitting on my porch, sipping lemonade, like a trio of Southern belles.

Julie sipped her drink. “We’re the talk of the town, ya know. Who needed to be a cheerleader to be popular?”

“Yeah. All we had to do was get bitten and join a crazy paranormal world that nobody knows about.”

“We’re far more popular with the immortals than we ever were with mortals.”

“People know my name and my face, but not my story,” I said. “They’ve heard what I’ve done, but they don’t know truly what I’ve been through.”

“It’s going to take a while for us to heal. Maybe it would help us to heal if we spoke candidly.”

“Like at a witch meeting or something,” Cindy asked.

Julie nodded. “Sure. Why not?”

I shook my head. “Um, no. Because it’s more than just witch stuff.”

“C’mon. You’ll feel better. Because keeping everything hidden inside isn’t good for the soul. Getting it all out into the open will do wonders for you.”

I blew out a long breath. “Maybe I’m a little traumatized by going to Hell or even that island for that matter. I had a nightmare last night and woke up screaming.”

“You can talk to me,” Cindy said. “What was it about?”

“You know what?” I said. “This conversation is getting far too serious. How about we lighten it up?”

“We should go for a run,” Julie suggested, a big grin across her face. “It’d be good to just burn off some steam.”

Cindy nudged her. “Hey, what about me?”

“You can fly low. We’ll stay in the woods.”

“Tabby said Cindy’s not allowed to do that,” I said. “And she can only turn at night.”

“She was supposed to take me flying last week but never did,” Cindy retorted. “I know she’s busy, but I’ve been waiting too long for her to find me a private spot.”

“We can’t take a chance on being exposed,” I said. “That wouldn’t be good for any of us.”

“I know, but I just want to fly and be free. My spirit yearns for it. It’s part of who I am.”

“We yearn for that same kind of freedom, only on foot—or paw, rather. Our wolf spirits and DNA demand that we take an occasional run through the woods. So I know how you feel.”

“You need the woods, but I need the sky.”

“Who would’ve ever thought gargoyles and wolves would become best friends?” Julie chuckled.

I laughed. “I know. We’re quite the misfits, huh?”

Cindy stood and started to look around, fear consuming her gaze. She stood so abruptly that she nearly knocked over her pink lemonade.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, steadying her glass.

“Listen…” she said, holding a finger up to her lips to silence us.

With my supernatural hearing, I caught the sound of crackling leaves, crunching underfoot, as if someone was walking in the woods, moving in our direction.

“What if it’s Ivan?” I asked. “It could be a sneak attack.”

Cindy peered at me, squinting in the sunlight.
