CHAPTER TWELVE

“That means a lot of people out of work,” Camille said when I told her about the conversation later.

“I know. It’s super shitty.” The last of the clean-up crew had left. We were sitting on the padded benches on the back deck. The house doors were wide open and music was playing inside.

Camille was thoughtful. “I like Brodie’s. It was the first place I went after I looked at the house.”

“My parent’s had their first date there. It was the first place I got drunk.”

She smiled at me. “Wish I’d been there to hold your hair.”

As nice as it would have been to have met her a little earlier in life, I was glad she wasn’t there that particular night. “Not sure I would have left quite the same impression.”

“No. Climbing a roof during a hurricane while wearing a strap-on was a much faster way into my heart.”

I leaned across the bench and kissed her. “Still want to marry me tomorrow?”

Her eyes shone back. “You know I do.”

“So how does it work? Do we just roll up at the courthouse and do the deed?”

“I’ve done some research,” she said, looking quite pleased. “First, we fill out the application—I printed it off. Then we go to the courthouse and pay the fee, then we see an officiant. I think I’ve found one.” She handed me her phone. There was a picture of smiling, gray-haired woman standing under an archway in a flower garden holding her arms out in welcome. She had friendly eyes. “Perfect.”

“She can take us tomorrow afternoon.”

“Even better.”

“I told her I’d call her back once I talked to you. We can keep looking if you want.”

“Nope, I like her.” I kissed her again. “I feel like the luckiest girl on the planet right now.”

She grinned back at me. “Wanna wrestle for the title? I feel pretty lucky, too.”

Again with the wrestle talk. With that grin, I knew she was being serious. “Upstairs or down here?”

She looked around us, to the deck, to the living room rug, then down to the beach. “Probably better to keep sand out of it.”

“Out of my crack?”

“Yes, and your eyes, your mouth, ears, hair, etcetera.”

“Listen to you. You might get sand in places, too.”

She laughed. “You never know. You have been training.”

I shook my head. “Confident to the last, even in the face of total annihilation.” I knew that last comment would be enough to set her off. A moment later she was on top of me, pinning me to the bench.

“You’re not fighting back,” she laughed.

“Why fight when I can see your breasts perfectly?” I wasn’t trying to be funny. She was leaning right over top of me and I had a clear shot straight down her shirt.

“Let me feel how strong you are,” she whispered.

I was flat on my back with my hands pinned above my head. Any move I made wasn’t likely to feel very strong. “Short of launching you over my head right now, I think I’ll have to submit this round.
