“Good morning, sleepy heads,” Aiden greeted the love of his life and his son.

Kai’s brow rose before she walked over to grace him with a kiss to the cheek.

“When did you get back?”

“I never left,” Aiden whispered.

“Where did you get the clean clothes?”

He blushed.

“They’re Koa’s.”

After his shower, he had gone rummaging through Koa’s closet and found a pair of dark gray sweatpants and matching t-shirt. They were a little baggy and long, but they were clean and comfortable.

This time both brows hitched upward.

“Huh,” she stated flatly.

Without another word, she went to grab a glass, mug, and a plastic kiddy cup from the cupboard.

“Want some coffee?” Kai asked.

“Yes, please.”

“Aloha, Mr. Kaplan!”

A.J. ran over to him and hugged his waist. Without pause, he gave him a brief hug and kissed the top of his sleep-tousled locks.

“Good morning, buddy,” Aiden answered, unaware of the sappy grin covering his face at the sight of his son.

“What are you cooking?” A.J. questioned going to sit at the table with his grandfather.

“Scrambled eggs, turkey sausages and whole wheat toast,” Aiden informed happily.

“Mmm,” A.J. licked his lips as he sat patiently waiting at the kitchen table.

“That does sound good,” Mr. Kapahu said patting his belly hungrily. “I’m starving.”

Kai agreed as she set the mug of coffee near the stove where he stood.

“I heard strenuous activity does that to you,” Aiden smirked, eyes glowing mischievously.

Before he could move away, Kai pinched him playfully on the ass.

“Okay, you two,” Mr. Kapahu admonished good-naturedly looking up from his paper. “There is a child present.”

A.J. giggled bringing him back from his lustful thoughts.

“Food’s ready,” Aiden announced as he brought the filled dishes of hot food to the table. Everyone helped themselves, except A.J., who was served by him.

“Hmm,” Kai hummed appreciatively. “It’s delicious.” Her father shook his head in agreement. “Did Bobby Flay teach you how to make this?” Kai tapped her lower lip playfully. “Or was it, Anne Burrell?”

Aiden’s head bowed in mock shame.

“I’m never gonna live that down, am I?”

“Nope,” she rebuked with a smug smile.

A.J. sat staring at him, a brow arched in thought.

“What’s the matter, buddy?” Aiden studied his little boy.

“Mr. Kaplan?”

“Yes, A.J.?”

His son smiled at him, blue eyes as clear as the cloudless Hawaiian sky outside the kitchen window.

“When can I start calling you daddy?”

Stunned by the comment, Kai choked on her orange juice, sputtering and coughing into her napkin. Mr. Kapahu gently patted his obviously shocked daughter on the back until she was able to breathe normally again.

“A.J.,” she responded as calmly as she could. “Who told you Mr. Kaplan is your father?”

Kai glanced at her father with a dagger-like stare, nostrils flaring in anger.

“No way,” Joseph claimed, sounding as surprised as she did; his Hawaiian lilt strengthened under his livid daughter’s scrutiny. “I didn’t say noth’in.”

She looked back at A.J.

“Who told you?” she asked again, her usually dormant Hawaiian accent stronger because of her stress.

“Nobody,” the little boy shrugged.

“Are you telling me the truth?” she grilled. “Nennie didn’t tell you?”

“Mommy,” he sighed looking at her directly—blue eyes to amber eyes.
