CHAPTER 18
After Fraserâs visit, it had been difficult to go back to sleep. Instead, Jeanine decided to read aloud to Henry and settled on a Cosmopolitan article about the benefits of regularly tweezing oneâs eyebrows. He didnât contribute much to the one-sided debate she had in-between reading the article, but she found him to be an avid listener. She had almost finished the article when a team of doctors and nurses entered the room.
âI apologize for the inconvenience, Miss Buckley, but weâre here to get Mr Peters ready for his transfer.â
âAbout time, too.â
All eyes turned to the bed to find Henry smiling faintly. Jeanine immediately reached for his hand.
âYouâre awake!â
âAll thanks to my ardent interest in tweezing,â he rasped and opened his eyes. âWhat transfer are they talking about?â
âAmerica. My grandmother is taking us to be with my mother in New York.â
Henry swallowed convulsively and Jeanine reached for the cup with crushed ice. She scooped a tiny bit into his mouth.
âAnd the office?â
âNo work for you for at least a month or so, Mr Peters,â one of the doctors interjected. âYouâll need all the time you can get to regain your strength. As a result of the silver bullets used in the attack, the early onset poisoning weakened you to a point where I doubt youâll be able to shift to accelerate your recovery.â
âOkay.â He closed his eyes again but opened them again when Jeanine traced her finger over his eyebrow.
âTheyâre in serious need of tweezing, Henry.â Amidst the medical teamâs chuckles, she left the room. She called her mother. The call was picked up on the first ring.
âDarling? Did something happen? Is your grandmother notâ¦â
âHenry gained consciousness.â
There was a breathless silence. âIs he okay?â
âYes. He woke up and made a joke. Theyâre in there getting him ready for our trip.â
âYour trip?â
âGrandma is bringing us to you. Was that not the plan?â
A loud exhale floated over the line. Her mother sounded happy. âYes, it was part of the plan.â
Jeanine found she was just as excited to see her mother again. She couldnât wait to tell her about the baby. âI canât wait to see you, Mother.â
âMe too, darling. Tell Henry I canât wait to see him also.â
Jeanine smiled. Old people and their decorum. âIâll tell him that you love him and canât wait to do the nasty with him again.â
Antonia gasped loudly and Jeanine hung up. That should tide her mother over until she had Henry in her arms. She noticed the guards staring at her with wide-eyes and shrugged.
âWhat? Theyâre in love and people in love doâ¦â She laughed out loud when the guards quickly covered their ears and closed their eyes. Henry was awake and she was going to see her mother soon. That was reason enough for her to be happy and laughing.
***
Antonia stared at the phone in her hand before she burst out laughing, startling a group of birds in a nearby tree. Her laughter echoed through the woods. She inhaled the fresh air and realized at that moment that she had come to love this place.
