Chapter 11

Chase

“I think another week and then we can take this cast off,” the doctor drones as he looks at my new x-rays. “We’ll get you set up with a physical therapist to get your leg back to proper use. And then you’ll be good as new.”

What a relief. One more week with this godforsaken wall of plaster on my leg. I’ll be able to walk again, play drums the way I want again, and I’ll be able to…move back into my apartment.

I don’t want to think about leaving my parents’ house. It’s been so nice. All the quality time with them and getting to know Rachel and Dan better now that they’re grown up.

And Jenna.

Jenna’s the sorest spot in my getting better. Because as soon as I leave, that’s it. Right? I mean, we haven’t spoken about what an ending will look like between us. It just seems implicit. Like how I move on to the next town when I’m on tour. There’s nothing to be sentimental about. That’s just life.

I’ll go back to my apartment, get ready to record the next album. Jenna will go back to school, be consumed with classes, and trying to find that elusive internship or job. We’ll go our separate ways. Maybe see each other in passing at Christmas or Thanksgiving. And we won’t ever speak of what’s been happening between us, but we’ll always know.

Why is that thought so painful?

Jay brought me here but he had to leave right after. Said he had an appointment he just couldn’t miss. I wonder if it has anything to do with a woman? Lucas picks me up and drives me back home. I haven’t seen him since the tour ended and he’s in really good spirits.

“I’ve already come up with a few song concepts. I can’t wait to get into the studio,” he says excitedly as we breeze down the highway.

I shift slightly in my seat. “That’s awesome, man.”

“Yeah. I mean, it’ll be hard to top the last album, but this one has to fuck,” Lucas adds. “It has to go hard.”

“Yeah, it does have to fuck.”

“Maybe you can take a look at some of the lyrics I’ve already written out. You always give good feedback,” he says with a casual shrug.

Lucas and Dylan normally write most of our lyrics. And they’re really good. Poetic, but direct. Searing and sentimental. The perfect amount of light and shade. “Totally, man. Listen –“ I get a burst of courage, “I’d love to get some more acoustic stuff on the album.”

He considers, narrowing his eyes on the road. As the vocalist, Lucas definitely has had his moments of being a diva and has vetoed ideas in the past. “What were you thinking?”

“I don’t know, just really get down to our roots. A little folk, a little country. Make it ours, of course, but let’s really show our inner Texan, you feel me?” I say. “I already have a few ideas for lyrics and – “

“You’re writing lyrics? Right on, man,” Lucas says with a lopsided smile.
