Twenty-Two

Until, Drake actually saw Anya emerge from the Gulfstream he’d sent for her on Friday night, he did not believe that she’d actually come to Chicago.

He’d been in the middle of negotiating an Australia co-promoter for The Verdant Fund project – being simultaneously set up in seventeen countries - when Dev, Zara’s Dev video-called him up personally and invited him to come to their wedding.

“It would mean a lot to Zara and Lily and to me, Drake. So I hope you make it,” Dev told him without prevarication.

“I thought you guys were planning a Diwali shindig. Wasn’t that the plan?”

“It was,” Dev had agreed cheerfully. “Plans change. Don’t they?” He’d looked rested, relaxed…a man in his element in the shorts and tee shirt he’d worn while lounging under a sycamore tree at Sycamore Drive.

“Yeah,” Drake had murmured. “That they do.”

He thought about his own plan – never to marry, never to attach himself to anyone. All blown to smithereens because of his damnable need to control everything and everyone who tried to manipulate him.

“Besides, a summer wedding is perfect for the weather here.” Dev grinned. “And we miss seeing your handsome face, you know.”

Drake made some random comment to that. Envying this man he could buy and sell five times over with his accumulated net worth. At one point, he’d even wanted to when he’d thought he wanted Zara, the CEO of AllMart, and Dev’s fiancée.

But Zara had only ever had eyes for Dev, the love of her young, golden life. And Drake wasn’t cruel enough to tear them apart for his own selfish gains.

Not like he had with…he shut the thought down cold.

“So, you’ll come, right?”

Drake wanted to refuse. Of course, he did. He did not want to socialize with anyone. Particularly the overly familial Subramanians, who made it all look so easy.

“Sure. Of course, I will. It’ll be great seeing everyone again.”

“Thanks, man. I’ll inform the wedding planner people you’re coming. Plus one?” Dev checked something off his phone.

Drake almost shook his head. “Yes,” he said instead. “I’ll be bringing someone.”

Dev wisely did not pry more and they’d finished the conversation with Dev shooting the relevant details to Drake.

~~~~~~
Before he could second guess himself, Drake immediately sent Mili a missive informing her of the change in his travel plans and included a terse note for her.
And there she was. The freaking mirage in his head, haunting his every thought. Breaking his concentration with distressing regularity.
He’d buried himself in work. Half a world away, so he didn’t have to see Anya’s dry-eyed broken face.
He’d succeeded in winning half the battle.
The work was fulfilling, giving him a newfound purpose and challenge he’d not felt for the last two years.
But he couldn’t get rid of the image of Anya. The last look he’d had of the woman he’d married in such unholy haste it appalled him now.
She’d not cried. She’d not made a fuss when she’d come to know of Aster’s devilish machinations.
No, she’d just left him. Right in the office where he’d been driven to heaven inside her.
