Chapter Nineteen: Surge
MY STOMACH DROPS AS the parchment falls from my hands.
I donât know what I just read. This isnât happening. This canât be happening. This makes no sense and it isnât freaking logical.
Rokko backs away, as does Amiya. Silently, I thank them for giving me space, and I know Amiya picks up my vibe.
I run a hand down my face, feeling a void. Helpless. As though the world stops spinning. Or at least my world has. All I know is that near us, in this Colony, the One of the Five, my sister, twin, faces daily torture, harrassment, and Trinity knows what else from this man who calls Himself Messiah.
This man, whose reign of terror runs within the confines of His little empire that the corrupt Bastille Government looks the other way while He takes advantage of women like her.
My stomach turns as I look back at the photo. The girl looks so much like me that at first glance, I thought she was me.
Iâm small, and Amiya is smaller, but this girl looks to be in both height and girth, somewhere between us. Her hair is shorter than mine, running just past her shoulders, and her face has more of a joyous look to it, despite her situation.
Iâve always held more of a serious expression. And since I now have a nice, little scar running down the right side of my face besides my more recent facial souvenirs, Iâm sure people would have no difficulty telling us apart if I can somehow save this girl...Asuka.
I draw a breath and exhale for at least five seconds. I close my eyes and count to five, and these combined exercises allow my heart to return to a normal rate.
âOkay,â I whisper, turning back to Rokko and Amiya.
âMina, youâre shellshocked,â Rokko says, taking a tentative step forward. âWeâre not going anywhere tonight, okay?â
Knowing itâs pointless to argue, I nod, wave him and Amiya over, and as though on cue, both collapse beside and pull me into a group hug.
After what feels like an hour, we break apart, Rokko looking me up and down. âYouâre going to need to sleep. Amiya and I can keep watch, and the other can stay near you if you want us to?â
âIâll be grateful for that.â In my mind, Iâm trying to figure out how Iâm going to be able to sleep tonight. I mean, I just found out I have a twin sister in the weirdest way, and that my mother isnât even my real mother, but a woman who probably took notice of me when I had this illness. Whatever was wrong with me.
Is my real mom still alive? My real dad?
Could it be that throughout this entire time, I have a family within the walls of this Colony? If thatâs the case, Iâm rescuing more than just Asuka.
Then again, if they were alive, Iâm sure Moa wouldâve said something in her letter.
She even knew our names and she was a Spirit Master.
