Chapter 34

It shined eternally. The locket in my hands was as bright as the day Alamander had presented it to me as a wedding gift. The Symbol of Eternal Love, he called it. I wish I could say that I was savvy enough to decline any gift from the man, but I was too distracted to consider the implications involved. That, and I had erroneously figured Alamander would behave in front of Joanna.

Needless to say, putting on the locket in sheer haste to impress my new bride was a terrible mistake. The damn thing shocked the hell out of me for a solid two minutes before Knives was able to pull it off without electrocuting himself as well. All the while, Alamander hooted and laughed at my foolishness of accepting such a gift.

I believe Joanna had the last laugh, however, as she had softly approached him, put a gentle hand on his shoulder and with the other? She punched him in the face so hard that it put even more of a crook in the crook’s nose. Overall, a great way for her to get acquainted with Alamander, and he to her.

Later, the lout had appeared to quietly request the locket back. It was only supposed to shine, but Alamander had made a few errors in the calculation that caused it to become a living wire, in a sense. Since electricity in this world was something that a Champion could resist easily, I wasn’t killed on the spot. Anyone else wouldn’t be so lucky. His delight and laughter had been just a natural reaction to seeing his work go wild on me.

I never bothered to give it back to the man. Was I pissed? Well, as much as one can be when in the presence of a genius. I gave him hell, sure, but secretly I always thought a necklace like this would have some kind of potential. And the mere fact that it was inherently unstable gave it a major benefit. The general dispellation rule was ‘the bigger the drawback, the faster it will return to normal’. And I’d say getting shocked to death was one hell of a negative effect.

The cylindrical golden locket was in the shape of a lighthouse, crackling every few seconds with raw electricity. The damn thing was semi-connected to an eternal plane of lightning, so in a way, it functioned like a cable connected to the world’s largest power source.

“You know, money can’t buy happiness!” I quipped as I tossed the amulet towards the dead center of the pool. “But it sure as hell can buy destruction.”

The locket struck water and next thing I knew, the entire floor beneath the statue was crackling and pulsing with electrical power. Lashes of white and blue lightning struck out as if searching for someone to hit.

Seconds later, the water exploded as Logan soared upwards, propelled by some kind of mystic power. I could see that he was being severely electrocuted by the water, though, like any other Champion, he was able to resist a good portion of the damage.
