Nolan ended the call from Sam and looked at her partner with a glazed expression.

“What? I’ve never seen you look dumbstruck before.”

“Sam just heard from Maya Lucerno. Bechtold took his dog for a walk around the block, and he got abducted.”

“You have got to be shitting me. Why the hell would they abduct the ransom-payer? It doesn’t make any sense at all. In fact, it’s pretty goddamned ominous, you ask me.”

“RSS has never seen anything like it. Who are they playing? The cops? Bechtold?”

Crawford shook his head, baffled. “Taking him was a risky move, but I don’t see an endgame. Do they have any leads?”

“A bleached blond woman was seen throwing his phone out of a silver Mercedes sedan. The windows were smoked, so the witness didn’t know if there was a passenger, but they assume he was in the car. They’re working off a partial plate number.”

“This is getting really weird.”

“Sam thought so, too, that’s why he called.”
