“Let’s not check,” I said, smiling to show that I got the joke. “Even if we don’t find any other food, we won’t starve to death in three days.” I’d taken the body for purposes unrelated to cooking.

I remembered a joke about a cannibal, who’d survived a plane crash. He was found sitting under a palm, surrounded by human bones. “I did it to survive,” he said. “But the plane only crashed yesterday,” the rescue commander objected. Yeah… Food was hard to come by here, so what seemed like a joke now might come true one day. Especially if the missions continued to increase in length. However, there was no point in thinking so far in advance and worrying about what might never happen. I didn’t tell my companion about the flasks, some of which didn’t contain blood but rather a much more nutritious liquid. Out of greed, I suppose?
