Macdonald turned up soon afterwards. Enock rushed out at him. "Sam came home on the back of a motorbike. It was huge, really black and shiny!"

"So I heard. People told me."

Enock didn't seem to hear the sour note in Macdonald's voice. He went on excitedly, "And the man's—what's his name, Sam?"

"Allan Poot," said Sam.

"That's right, the man, Allan, he says he'll come back and give us all rides."

"Not me, though. I wasn't here," Macdonald said grumpily.

"Well, I'm sure he means you, too. Doesn't he, Sam?"

Sam pretended not to hear.

When he unrolled his mat and lay down to sleep that night, it was the motorbike that he saw and felt, the wind on his cheeks and the thrumming of the engine as it hurtled him toward sleep.
