Each part of an IP address has a special meaning. However, before discussing those meanings, it is necessary to understand that IP addresses come in four different classes: Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class D.

Class A IP addresses are expressed in 32 bits. They can range from 000.000.000.000 to 127.255.255.255. The first byte is the part that is expressed as the first three numerals in the string. As you can see, Class A IP addresses max out at 127.

This means that there can only be 127 network addresses in a Class A network. However, because the other numbers are used to identify individual computers and workstations, there can be a total of 16,777,216 computers on these networks.
