CHAPTER 9

Lyssa stared at her mother in disbelief. She’d been betrayed by the one woman she never feared would stab her in the back. Their mission had been to ask Proteus a single question. Athena had aided them in that crusade, that’s how critical the answer to her question was.

“Proteus, I asked for the name of the entity who attacked my demigoddess daughter and brought an illness upon her.” Circe’s voice shook with anger. Her mother turned in her direction. “Next time, that being may give you something that could kill you.”

She understood the motivation behind her mother’s action, but she should’ve found another way. Proteus would’ve said the name Matthias in response to her question and she’d finally be free of the marriage contract.

“How could you, Mother?” she asked.

“Somethings are more important than a marriage of inconvenience,” Circe replied. “Your life for instance. Proteus, I ask you again, who attacked my daughter?”

“Untie me and I will answer your question,” Proteus said.

Demoralized, Lyssa did as the god requested. She didn’t care who gave her a cold. It could be the leprechaun’s magic for all she knew. It had been a rough few days, but not worth losing the chance to ask her own question.

Proteus rose to his feet as soon as he was untied. “Illuminate,” he said. Bright lights that made the room appear as if it were a sunny day temporarily blinded her.

When she got her vision back, she watched as the old man examined his attackers. He appeared genuinely surprised that four women had successfully overtaken him.

“Athena and Circe, what is the meaning of this?” Proteus demanded.

In the bright light of a new day, she knew that Athena had betrayed her as well. When Circe came to Olympus to gain invitations, the two of them must have hatched the plan. The Goddess of Wisdom appeared unruffled by her mother’s hijacking of their victim.

“You have a question to answer, Proteus,” Athena replied. “Do as you have pledged.”

The god scanned Lyssa’s face and then placed his palm against her cheek. “Circe, I understand why you cherish her above all your children. She has a pure soul and rivals Aphrodite herself when it comes to beauty. A marriage to Matthias seems to be such a waste.”

“The answer,” Circe shouted.

She didn’t understand her mother’s anger and Proteus’s comment about the engagement. For whatever reason, the god didn’t immediately respond to Circe’s question.

“Wait,” Lyssa said. “Do you see a marriage between Matthias and myself?”

Proteus smiled. “Only one question is allowed. From your reaction to what your mother asked, I do not believe it is the question you came to inquire about.”

Could the god be swayed from answering her mother’s question and reply to hers?

“I do not want to wed the beast who killed my true love,” Lyssa replied. “My question would have been to have you confirm that so my mother could hear Matthias had killed Dylan. That truth would get me out of the marriage I do not want.”

Rather than answering any of the questions presented to him, Proteus paced.
