Chapter Twelve
It wasnât thirty minutes after Lynn left when there was another knock on my door. I had been mulling over what she told me about Merlene, and I couldnât help but wonder if she might be his killer.
âI wonder who that could be?â I mused, rising from the kitchen table. I had just finished washing the morning dishes, and another batch of cinnamon rolls was in the oven.
I wiped my hands on a dish towel and headed to the door.
âOh!â I exclaimed when I opened my door.
Margaret Johnston smiled at me from the front step. âGood morning, Allie. I hope Iâm not disturbing you.â
I shook my head and returned her smile. âNo, not at all. How are you doing, Margaret?â
She shrugged. âI guess Iâm doing about as well as can be expected. Still trying to make myself understand that my son is dead.â Her bottom lip trembled when she said it, but she quickly recovered and smiled again.
I shook my head. âIâm so sorry. This must be so hard for you. Would you like to come in? Iâm baking fresh cinnamon rolls, and Iâve got coffee ready.â
âI would love to.â
I ushered her into the kitchen and fetched fresh coffee cups and plates. I had never had two visitors to my home on the same day, especially two unexpected visitors who were related to a murder victim, but I wasnât about to complain. The more information I could gather, the better.
âIâll get that cinnamon roll and coffee for you.â
She nodded and sat at the table. âThat would be wonderful. Allie, you bake the best cinnamon rolls Iâve ever tasted. Iâm a fairly good baker myself, but I donât think I can bake a cinnamon roll half as well as you can.â
I smiled at her praise, but I was a bit suspicious as to why she was lavishing it so generously. âOh, Margaret, youâre flattering me. But I do like to hear that someone appreciates my baking.â
âIâm not flattering you. I mean it. Theyâre simply the best cinnamon rolls that Iâve ever eaten.â
âThank you,â I said, filling two cups with coffee and setting out two cinnamon rolls. I wasnât sure I could eat another cinnamon roll since I just finished one when Lynn was here, but I was going to do my best.
âWhat brings you out this way, Margaret?â
She took a sip of her coffee before answering. âI donât know. I guess I was a bit lonely, and it was so kind of you to bring those cinnamon rolls by the other day. In fact, I was thinking I would like to place an order for three dozen cinnamon rolls for the meal after Jackâs funeral, if you have the time.â
I nodded. âOf course I have the time. Iâll even make them for free. Theyâll be my donation.â
Her eyes widened. âOh, are you sure? You donât have to do that. I would gladly pay you for them.â
I shook my head. âIt would be my honor to make them for you. Iâll get them baked and drop them by your house early in the morning.
