I was still musing over Roland’s words when I returned to the castle kitchens. I was so distracted by the thoughts racing through my mind that I almost ran straight into Vespera.

That would have gone over well.

My aunt was in what I referred to as her ‘warrior mode’, dressed in leather with her sword by her side and her luxurious hair braided back severely from her perfect face.

“We need to talk,” she said without preamble.

I raised an eyebrow. “OK,” I agreed cautiously.

I never knew what to expect from Vespera. She was an enigma. My father trusted her implicitly; I knew that. But there was something about her I just couldn’t warm up to.

Maybe it was because I knew she had despised my mother.

She opened the nearest door, which lead to one of the store rooms where we kept dried herbs. Finding there was no one within, she dragged me inside.

“You need to convince Lenus he needs to choose a side,” she said bluntly.

I regarded her carefully. Knowing Vespera, this could very easily be a trap. The last thing I wanted was to be accused of treason against my father.

“At this point, either side will do,” she said, impatiently striding across the room. I had never seen her so agitated. “Lenus listens to you, for some reason. The kingdom is in disarray. Lenus must choose his allies now, before he loses everything.”

“I can’t make my father do anything,” I reminded her. “He wouldn’t even help the refugees for fear that it would force his hand in supporting that cause. He is being very… cautious.”

“Which is not like my brother,” Vespera said, almost crossly. “In the past, Lenus has been too impulsive, if anything. He cannot wait for this to blow over. The worlds are changing. I fear that he, and the entire court, will be swept away if they don’t choose their high ground.”

I had to admit she was making sense.

“I’ll try,” I said reluctantly. “I don’t think it will do any good, but I’ll attempt to talk to him.”

“Good.” My aunt regarded me seriously. “You know, the Restoration could have chosen a worse figurehead for their cause.”

It figured she’d heard all about that.
