CHAPTER NINE

WHEN HER FATHER returned from getting his tests, the nurse suggested that they all needed to be rested when the neurologist arrived that evening to discuss the results. Leni agreed and she convinced her mom to come home with her to get a nap.

She rode in the car with her mom and Nick followed them in his rented SUV. They arrived at the Long home an hour later. Though the day was cold, the house was toasty. A batch of sugar cookies, coated in frosting and covered in red and green sprinkles, sat on the counter as if her mom had just finished making them when her dad had his seizure.

Denise removed her coat and hung it on a coatrack by the door. “Let me make lunch.”

Leni gaped at her mom. “No!”

“Absolutely not,” Nick agreed. “You heard what the nurse said. She wants you rested when you come back.”

Denise shook her head. “I’m too keyed up to sleep.”

Leni put her hands on her mom’s shoulders and turned her in the direction of the bedrooms. “Go lay down anyway.”

“I’ll tell you what,” Nick said. “You get some rest and when you wake up lunch will be ready.”

Leni faced him. She might not have seen Nick’s life, but she would guess he had a maid or ate out most of the time. He certainly didn’t look like a guy who knew how to make lunch. “You’re going to cook?”

He laughed. “I’m not a great cook but I make a mean spaghetti.”

Denise half smiled. “I like spaghetti.”

“Good. Go rest.”

As her mom walked away, Leni studied Nick. When he wanted to be, Nick Kourakis was the nicest guy in the world. He’d picked her up at the airport, taken her to see her dad and stayed with her and her mom, not just getting coffee and doughnuts but offering moral support. And she couldn’t forget how they’d moved close together in the night, snuggling together for warmth. And how he’d been studying her face when she’d awakened—

But she remembered he also hadn’t kissed her at her hotel room door the night he could have. The night it would have been the perfect ending to the perfect day, he’d walked away from the chance to kiss her. And despite the way they’d cuddled together in the chilly waiting room, he’d told her Danny had called him to let him know about her dad and asked him to fly to Kansas to intercept her. His being here was Danny’s idea. Gravitating together for warmth meant nothing.

“I’m not sure we have spaghetti in the house.”

He shrugged. “Does Mannington have a grocery store?”

“Of course, we have a grocery store!” Realizing she’d protested too much, she winced. “A small one.”

“As long as it has spaghetti, I don’t care if it’s the size of a minivan.”

She laughed, as she re-zipped her jacket. He really knew nothing about small towns. But her mom needed support and Nick was offering it.

Because Danny had sent him.

As long as she remembered he was
