Author’s Notes for Coffee

I originally wrote this short story for an anthology and was going to include it here as is, but it didn’t feel quite done. I expanded it to capture Alexander’s world as an American solider of German descent in post-war Berlin, and to give him a little hope. I like to think his mother is alive and they will be reunited.

Wonderful books that deal with postwar Berlin are A Woman in Berlin by Joseph Kanon (made into a movie starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett, but the book is better), and for the Russian invasion and the weeks afterward, I recommend the true story, A Woman in Berlin by Anonymous.

Here’s footage of Berlin in July 1945. At around 5:30 and 6:00, you can see scenes from the Sportpalast Ernst Vogel visited in 1931 in Cigarette Boy. You can also see parts of Potsdamer Platz where Hannah showed Anton the first traffic light installed in Europe in A City of Broken Glass, and Hotel Adlon, which features in a much better state in A Night of Long Knives and A Game of Lies. The view from the trams show what Alexander would have seen—blocks and blocks of skeletons of buildings.
