I pressed my body against the sharp rock face as I eased myself down the cliff's edge one shaky step at a time. My heels dangled over the precipice as the wind whipped at my back and threatened to toss me to oblivion. Portal magic, huh? It had to be something sketchy. Of course they’re suspicious of me. I’m suspicious of me. As a matter of fact, I'm suspicious of everyone. It feels like every time I'm with more than one of the Valkyries, they pull the other away to have some secret pow wow.

Ugh. All of this would be easier if I knew what the hell was going on. My foothold gave out, my stomach dropping and my heart slamming into my chest as my foot dangled over the open air to the sharp rocks at the foot of the cliff. My muscles ached as I clung on, my body coming down off of adrenaline as I retraced my steps to a solid stone.

I felt a gust of wind behind me, and Jaemin entered my periphery, hovering on the steady wind that was blowing up the cliff's edge.

"What do you want?" I called.

"You're going to fall and die. Let me take you home."

"I don't need your help," I shouted as I reached clumsily for another foothold.

He sighed. "Clearly."

"Besides, you all think I'm causing everything anyway. Maybe I should go to Nether with my people."

My heart jumped, tightening my grip as Jaemin landed beside me on the cliff's edge. "I don't think you belong in Nether."

"I don't know about that. You certainly didn't speak to that effect when Cielle was accusing me."

His jaw bulged, and in one smooth motion, he wrapped his arms around my waist and pushed off the cliff. I waited for the sensation of weightlessness to hit, the pull of his wings against the air, but there was only falling. His gaze was locked on me, but his expression was unreadable. When I was certain we'd slam into the rocks, his wings spread, and he cradled me onto his chest as we flattened out and glided toward the fields below. Once we were low enough, I pushed off him and tumbled onto the ground. Jaemin landed gracefully in front of me.

I felt the words rise to meet my anger, but before they reached my lips, he said, "You are not the Valerie I know." He sat on a large stone and sighed.

I crossed my arms. This should be good.

"The Valerie I knew would be insulted if I ever jumped in to defend her. She needed no one." His gaze lifted to me. "I still don't know why she chose me."

His dark eyes were riddled with pain, and without saying it, I could see how much he loved the girl he lost, but he was right. I wasn't her. I didn't know him the way she did. I didn't share the memories that bound them.

"The Valerie I knew could fix the valkyries, just like you said, because everyone believed in her.
