I wake up the next morning to the sound of a heartbeat thrumming against my ear. Blinking sleep from my eyes, I slowly lift my head to look at Cade, smiling at the sight of him. He looks so peaceful when he’s sleeping. His usual concerned frown is smoothed out, and his naked chest rises slowly up and down with every breath.

What a perfect start to Christmas Eve.

Cade sure kept his promise yesterday. We spent the whole day touching, tasting, exploring, fucking. Aside from a couple of food breaks, we didn’t leave his bed once, and it was well after midnight when we finally collapsed with exhaustion, spent and satisfied. There’s a delicious ache between my legs this morning—a reminder of my amazing day with Cade yesterday—and I have to resist the urge to wake him up for another round.

Quietly, I get out of bed and take a quick shower before opening Cade’s closet and pulling on another t-shirt that hangs down to my knees. I pad out of the bedroom and into the living room where I get a fire going in the hearth and make myself a coffee, sipping it as I look out of the kitchen window. The snow has finally stopped, but a thick layer still blankets everything in sight. Still, it’s bittersweet to know the blizzard is over. It means I’m running out of excuses to stay here with Cade. The roads are no doubt being cleared right this moment, and then all that will be left is to get my car fixed. It’s a thought that immediately dampens my good mood, and I try to push it from my mind.

I decide to do some work to distract myself. I boot up Cade’s laptop and open the article I wrote yesterday, reading it over again and looking for errors. It wasn’t easy padding out a story about Stanley Lockwood’s missing garden gnome, but I’ve done my best.

“Morning, beautiful.”

The deep voice makes my heart soar, and I turn around to see Cade filling the bedroom doorway wearing nothing but a pair of boxer shorts.

“Good morning,” I say, beaming at him.

He makes a beeline for me and leans down to kiss me hard on the mouth. “Merry Christmas Eve.”

I gasp, clutching the chair in mock surprise. “Did Mr. Grinch seriously just wish me a Merry Christmas Eve?”

“He sure did.” He kisses me again. “Let’s just say that last night really put me in the holiday spirit.”

I giggle as he wraps his arms around me from behind, pressing kisses against my neck before catching sight of the article.

“Can I read it?” he asks, peering curiously at the screen. “I’d love to see some of your work.”

“Yeah, sure,” I say, feeling a little embarrassed as Cade starts to scan the article. When I said I was a journalist, he probably imagined I was writing serious stories, not reports of missing garden gnomes. My heart squeezes uncomfortably as his brow furrows at the words on the screen, his frown deepening the more he reads.
