His groin tightened with thoughts of Davina as he stared out the window, wondering when she would arrive. He’d fired his so-called estate manager. Judging by what she’d achieved at the cottage, Davina could organize the pants off every applicant he’d ever interviewed for the job. If she stayed on in the village, he might sound her out for the position. The prospect of fiery clashes with a woman who knew her own mind, and who had no hesitation in expressing her views, held more appeal than he would have imagined possible.

Could she handle the things she didn’t know about in Hartshome? His best guess was yes.

His hackles stood to attention when he saw her coming down the drive. Sauntering downstairs in time to answer the door as she arrived, he got a jolt when he saw her framed against the snowy backdrop. Flushed, bright-eyed, and eager, she brushed against him as she walked in, nudging him onto the wrong side of lust. “Sorry.” She glanced up as if she’d felt that jolt too. “I’m so clumsy sometimes.”

“No apology needed.” The electricity between them was like a magnet that pulled them ever closer, and he had to remind himself to close the door. Warm and womanly, Davina exuded a type of energy the wolf inside him found irresistible. What a mate she’d be.

“Promise I won’t keep you long,” she said, studying him as if trying to unravel a mystery.

“No rush.” None at all. He led the way into his study. “Here’s your money.” Handing over an envelope, he suggested she check the contents.

“I trust you.” She stuffed the envelope into the inside pocket of her jacket unopened.

“Aren’t you going to stay for a drink? Some more coffee?” he suggested wryly.

“I didn’t plan to stay that long. But okay,” she finally agreed, “coffee would be good.”

It amused him when she led the way to the kitchen.

“Where are your dogs?” she asked as he made the coffee. “It’s just the thought of them somewhere out there gives me the shivers.”

“They’re patrolling,” he confirmed as he tipped coffee grounds into the machine. “Don’t look so worried. They wouldn’t hurt a fly unless they sense something’s not right.”

“They might not like me. I’m not sure I’m prepared to trust the instincts of your dogs as much as I trust their master.”

“I don’t know whether to be flattered or concerned.”

Davina drew in a sharp breath at the sound of claws clicking on marble. She swung around. “Are you sure they’re malamutes? They look exactly like wolves.”

“Alaskan malamutes,” he confirmed as two noble heads sniffed the air at the sight of Davina.

“Haven’t I read somewhere that they breed malamutes with wolves?”

“I’ve heard that said,” he admitted. “Out, boys. You’ve got work to do…”

Davina seemed relieved when his boys immediately turned to go. “You’ve got them well trained.”

“Big dogs can be dangerous if they’re not respected for their strength and intelligence. They need to know what’s expected of them, is all.”

“You make training them sound so easy,”
