Chapter Seven

With her new houseguests back at the apartment and settled, and a quick shower and change, Portia was ready to see the surprise Hollis had in store for her. She saved the mental picture of him playing on the floor with Kevin showing him different things he could do on the tablet. You wouldn’t think the man the news portrayed was so down to earth, but yet there he was, in her little apartment that could fit into his penthouse living room playing with a little boy who needed a friend. It warmed her heart watching him, knowing that all the guys out there weren’t superficial. Moore was in his usual driver’s seat as they maneuvered through the city traffic. New York never slept, even in winter. True New Yorkers braved the cold with coats pulled up around their ears and shopping bags up to the elbows of each arm. They passed Times Square heading to the business district, and at the stoplight she watched the tourists take pictures sitting on the steps.

“The M&M store has their Christmas store sale going on,” Portia said, looking out the car window.

“Should we stop?” Hollis asked instantly.

“No.” Portia gave an embarrassed laugh. “You found my chocolate weakness.”

He took her hand. “I’ll remember that for future reference.”

They pulled up at a warehouse looking type building that had a For Sale sign in the window. Over that sign, a big sold sticker was placed across the blue letters.

“Take that out of the window for me, will you, Monroe?” Hollis asked when he stepped out of the SUV.

“Sure thing,” Monroe answered.

“Why are we here?” Portia asked, looking up.

“Come inside and see,” he invited.

Hollis led her into the building, and she looked around at the people who were moving with purpose. Some carried blankets and others boxes of diapers, foodstuff, folding tables, toys, and more. The door to a small office stood open. Inside, she recognized the two men taking calls. They were a couple and came into her storefront sometimes. People lifted their hands in a wave as they passed by heading toward the office.

“How is it going, Leo?” Hollis inquired.

“Fantastic boss. Everything is moving like the Express Train to uptown.” Leo grinned. “Hey Portia, girl, don’t you look amazing in those boots. Hashtag... love.”

“Hey Leo, how are you?” Portia asked.

He waved a flamboyant hand. “Making miracles for Christmas, and it’s all because of you.”

“Color me confused.” Portia genuinely was.

“This is command central,” Hollis said with a grin.

Portia looked around. “To what? Seriously, Hollis, that tells me nothing.”

“Remember what you said about so many families probably alone in Penn Station without anyone,” Hollis explained. “I really took that to heart, and we came up with a plan.”

“We?”

“As in me, Leo, and my crew. Then Gerard had to join in,” Hollis answered. “We have social workers on-hand and volunteers at Penn Station, the bus station, hell, anywhere we think someone could need us. We’re going to make sure that mothers and children like Sarah and Kevin won’t be hungry and without someplace to stay this holiday.
