Chapter Eleven

Officer Cassidy is doing a great job of watching the house without being seen because I can’t tell where she is. There’s no patrol car on the street. And the cars in people’s driveways all appear to be empty.

“Where is Officer Cassidy hiding?” I ask Drew as we meet him at the front door.

He smiles. “I’d tell you, but I don’t want to blow her cover. She’s great at stakeouts and undercover work.”

“I can see why.”

Drew rings the bell.

I notice the curtains move ever so slightly in the upstairs front room over the garage. “I think he’s in the room above the garage,” I whisper.

Andrea opens the door. “Not again.”

“We came to inform you that Russell Brown is currently in police custody,” Drew says, surprising me.

“Is he the one who killed Gordon?” she asks. “Is the case closed?”

Maybe that’s what he wants her to think so she’ll let her guard down.

“He admitted to running an illegal gambling operation out of his home. He also admitted to knowing your brother.”

“But if you have him, my brother and I have nothing to worry about, right?”

I run through Andrea’s behavior since we met her. At first, she seemed to think her brother might have killed Gordon, but now I think she’s helping Bryan because she thinks Rusty is the killer. “Andrea, we know you’ve been hiding Bryan.”

She opens her mouth to protest, but I hold up my hand. “It’s okay. We get it. You both think Rusty killed Gordon and that he did it to force you to give him Gordon’s money. You and Bryan were looking out for each other, right? Sticking together so Rusty couldn’t sneak up on either of you. It makes sense.”

“Mrs. Price, I’ve had a police officer watching your house,” Drew says.

“What?”

“We were worried Rusty would come after you,” I clarify. “The officer saw Bryan in the upstairs window.”

Andrea’s jaw clenches, and she rubs her forehead. “That boy can’t do anything he’s told. One thing. Stay away from the windows. How difficult is that?”

“We need to speak with Bryan,” Drew says.

“Is he in trouble for the gambling thing?” she asks.

“We need some information. If he cooperates, it will greatly help him with the gambling charges.”

Andrea shakes her head. “Come in.” She closes the door behind her. “Get down here, Bryan. They saw you in the window, you idiot,” she calls up the stairs.

Bryan comes walking down, wearing light gray sweatpants and a navy blue zip-up hoodie over a white T-shirt. “Are you here to arrest me?”

“No,” Drew says. “We need to ask you some questions, though.”

“About what?” Bryan asks.

“Russell Brown and everyone else at the poker games,” Nolan says.

Bryan smirks. “I have some info you could probably make good money on if you’re willing to let me go free.”

Andrea smacks his arm. “You do not try to bribe police officers! What is wrong with you?”

“What? I’m trying to look out for myself.”

“Yeah, well maybe you should stop trying so hard because it’s clearly not working out for you.
