CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Bruno pulled up in front of the address Susan Di Grassi had given him at six thirty exactly. It was a small, old house, but the garden was tidy and everything looked cared for. There were two faces at the window.

“He’s here,” said Timmy excitedly. He’d been watching out the window for at least ten minutes waiting for this dude to appear.

“I’m glad he’s on time,” announced Charlie, his twin brother. “I’m starved. I hope he takes us somewhere close for dinner and we don’t have drive up to Cliffside like the last guy who invited us out decided to do.”

“I hope we go for pizza and not some fancy place with lots of knives and forks to worry about,” said Timmy.

The doorbell rang and the boys raced each other to answer it .

“Hey, it’s Mr. Schmidt!” said Timmy happily. “Mom, you didn’t tell us we were going to dinner with Mr. Schmidt!”

“You boys already know Bruno?” asked Susan, surprised.

“I teach the computer class they come to every Saturday at the Seascape Cove Rec Center,” laughed Bruno. “They’re my star pupils, aren’t you, boys?”

“We sure are,” boasted Charlie.

“That’s because we pay attention, Mom, and don’t fool around like some of the other kids. Where are we going to eat, Mr. Schmidt? Pizza?” piped up Timmy.

Bruno laughed. The two boys were his favorites in the computer class he offered at the Rec Center. They were well behaved, paid attention and they learned quickly.

“No, not pizza. I figured we might go down to Black Rock to the new Barbeque Restaurant that just opened up.”

“Won’t that be expensive for four of us?” asked Charlie. “Pizza here in Silver Springs Bay would be fine by us.”

“I guess that isn’t too far,” allowed Timmy. “We’re starved after our hockey practice. We were worried we’d have to go to that fancy place up in Cliffside.”

“Thanks for considering my wallet, guys,” smiled Bruno, “but don’t worry, I can afford it.”

Susan didn’t know whether to laugh or be embarrassed by her kids. Oh well...

“If you’re that starved, grab your jackets and get ready,” she told them.

Within minutes the boys were in the back seat of Bruno’s BMW SUV and Susan was in the front beside him.

“Nice car,” she said appreciatively.

“Thanks,” he said. “I like cars. I’ve got a couple of sports cars I enjoy driving as well, but they’re both two seaters. And boys,” he said, raising his voice a little so they’d hear him, “we’ll be at the restaurant in Black Rock in about ten minutes.”

The two hungry young men in the back seat grinned at each other. Barbeque in Black Rock was better than pizza in Silver Springs Bay any day.

Bruno was impressed how well the boys behaved, how they stuck to the cheap side of the menu until he told them they could have anything they wanted, and how they looked to their mother before they ordered anything expensive anyway. They were good kids.

Conversation was lively, and he found himself enjoying the family-type outing.

While they were waiting for dessert, Timmy turned to Susan.
