Chapter Seven

Garrett

“Harper, I totally screwed this up,” Garrett said, holding his face in his hands and resting his elbows on his desk. His friend, Harper, a woman he met while working at the KoffeeHaus, offered to video chat after receiving his vague text about needing to talk to someone. Even with their significant age difference, Harper quickly became a friend and confidante. It wasn’t long after Amanda left him and when he filed for retirement, that he found the ladies at KoffeeHaus through a random newspaper ad. Between Harper and Mrs. Lulu, they put his shambled soul and heart back together.

“Now, now. Let's not get dramatic here,” Harper piped up, wagging her finger at him through the video call, clearly amused by his distress.

“I don’t think there is any going back from this.” Garrett dropped his arms and leaned back in his chair, waiting for sound advice.

“Well... is that so bad? Don’t you like her?” Harper asked.

“I do, but I’m never committing to another romantic relationship. I suck at them, remember. Besides, she deserves better than what I can give her. She’s my advocate for adoption. I’m not going to make those waters muddy,” he said, weighing his options carefully.

“Hate to break it to you, smartass, but you flung fistfuls of dirt in that water when you kissed her; let alone confessed your desire for her,” Harper pointed out. Her blunt, but sound advice was ironically reassuring.

“I know, but I don’t know how to fix it without hurting my chances of fostering, let alone not hurting her. She doesn’t deserve to be hurt. Harper, she is the sweetest woman. She loves what she does, and all she ever talks about is her job, and the kids, and all the happy stories. It isn’t right for me to do this to her.” Garrett was conflicted, constantly running his hands through his hair, his nervous tick.

“Why would it be so terrible? Is it such a conflict of interest for her to date you? Maybe one of the other ladies you’ve talked about could take over your case,” Harper suggested.

“No, Harper. I will never date again. Never again. My heart is callous and stone,” Garrett interrupted Harper’s thought process.

“Never say never,” Harper interjected. Garrett could see her lean in to get his attention. “Listen buddy, just because some awful woman left you at the altar doesn’t mean every woman is going to break your heart. Maybe, just maybe, that woman you’ve always wanted is right smack in front of you. Don’t let her go, Garrett. You will regret never trying more, than you will the heartbreak that may happen. One small may for one huge chance at love.” There it was. Harper’s blunt advice.

Garrett didn’t like it.

He sighed, leaning back against the back of his chair, letting it tilt, rocking back and forth for a moment, as he chewed on Harper’s thought. “I don’t know…”

“Dude. I want to reach through this monitor and shake you. Make your decision, and make it soon, so
