Breed characteristics

This is a smooth-coated, thick-set dog with a wide chest, large head and distinctive projecting and upturned lower jaw. The Kennel Club describes him as ‘fierce in appearance but possessed of an affectionate nature’. The Bulldog has distinctive ‘rose’ ears which fold inwards and back, and the loose skin under his throat completes the look we all know so well. The Kennel Club specifies a weight of 25 and 22.5kg (55 and 50lb) respectively for males and females. His hindquarters should be high and strong, and his body well muscled. No height is specified, but a Bulldog will not usually be more than about 40.5cm (16in) at the shoulder. The KC allows the smooth coat in a number of different colours, including fawns, brindles and reds, and with or without a darker mask. Pied (white with another permitted colour) is also allowed. Black or black-and-tan is frowned upon.

Despite his ancestry, the Bulldog is not an aggressive breed, and would make a nice family companion were it not for his health problems.
