Jackson sat on the cement steps in front of the police station. It was early, the sun having just crested the horizon. Some paramedicâa manâhad placed a blanket around his shoulders, and despite the rapidly warming temperature, he shivered.
Two women had died fighting over him! This wasnât fun anymore. Jackson dug in his pocket and pulled out the black figurine of the woman. Could he destroy the talisman? Would that stop this madness?
A light blasting into his face made Jackson wince, and he turned his head and raised an arm to cover his face. âWhat the...â
âThis is Axel Hendricks of KW80 Channel Seven, coming to you live from Southbridge Police Station where a shootout erupted between two officers.â
Jackson uncovered his face and glanced up to find a man with a microphone standing in front of a man with a shoulder mounted camera.
âI stand here with one of the witnesses, Jackson Keller.â The man stepped to the side so that the cameraâand itâs lightâagain focused on Jackson. âTell us son, what did you see?â
Jackson stared at the reporter and stammered, âTh-they shot at each other. The one woman died, and the other was killed by the other cops.â
âAnd do you know what caused the dispute that escalated so quickly into such bizarre violence?â
âUh⦠me.â
The reporter furrowed his brow. âWhat was that, son?â
âIt was me. They were fighting over me.â
âAnd why were they fighting over you?â
âThey both wanted me. Like, in a sexual way.â
An incredulous laugh escaped the reporterâs lips, but he recovered quickly. âThis is no joke, son. Two police officers are dead.â
Before Jackson could answer, the camera man interrupted the reporter. He motioned to an earpiece. âEdison says the AP is picking up our coverage.â
The reporter grinned, showing off immaculate white teeth. âAxel Hendricks, you handsome son of a gun, youâve hit the big time!â
âWait,â Jackson said. âWhat does that mean?â
The reporter looked back down at him. âIt means that your chubby face and story are going international.â
An explosion of panic froze Jacksonâs chest. âNo!â
âWhatâs wrong, son?â the reporter asked. âEvery news outlet on the planet is going to carry this story. Your homely face will be everywhere. Youâre gonna be famous, and Iâm gonna be getting job offers.â
âNO!â Jackson stood, dropping his blanket. He made a feeble attempt to grab the camera but was easily repelled by the camera man.
âWhatâs your problem?!â the reporter said.
Jackson didnât answer. Instead he ran. A few police officers called out, but he was able to duck the police tape and dart into an alley. He dropped the figurine on the ground and stomped on it, but it did nothing to damage it. He glanced around and found a loose cinderblock, lifted it up and brought it down on the statue of the nude woman. The cement broke, not leaving a scratch on the figurine.
Jackson shook his head. There had to be a way to break the spell. Maybe if he just got rid of it! He scooped up the figurine and tossed it in a dumpster and ran out of the alley.
