Chloe

I scoop hair butter into my fingers and inhale the scent. A smile stretches my lips when a memory of Lee chasing me around to smell my hair flows through my mind.

Suddenly, I realize I’m grinning like an idiot and drop the smirk.

My heart pounds painfully.

What on earth is wrong with me?

“Mommy.” Somi’s sitting between my legs while I comb her hair before school. With her curls pasted flat to her head, her bright smile and almond-shaped eyes draw all the attention.

“Mm?” I spread the hair butter through her curls once more to keep them shiny and moisturized.

“Do you like Mr. Lee?”

My body stiffens so tight I’m sure I’ve turned to stone.

Somi studies her sheet music in one hand while her other hand tickles the air as if she’s playing a piano. In a casual voice, she continues, “You always bring snacks and stuff in the middle of our lessons.”

“Well,” I cough, “I’ve done that before.”

“No. With my old teacher, you brought snacks after we finished. Not in the middle.”

My pulse jacks up to a crazed pace.

Somi’s fingers tap the air faster. “And you always stare at Mr. Lee when he plays.”

“I do not.”

“It’s okay because he stares at you too.” She tilts her head as her fingers slow their pace. “I think he plays for you.”

A lump forms in my throat and won’t go away.

Is it that obvious?

I’ve never heard Lee play the piano and I’ve found that I’m insanely addicted to it.

He plays with such passion. Such raw power. It’s like I’m peeking into another world. A kingdom trapped in black and white keys.

And he’s the king of every inch of it.

He moves and the song dances.

He commands and the air obeys.

Emotions spill into melodies I can feel. It’s more than an auditory experience. It’s… magnificent.

I’m not much of a musical person. I like the classics because Somi likes it, but I wouldn’t spend hours listening to Beethoven or Bach. Learning an instrument is akin to torture for me. But when Lee puts his hands on that keyboard, I’m obsessed.

“You laugh a lot more now and you get excited when he shows up.” Somi’s fingers stop. “Except for yesterday.”

Yesterday, Somi asked if she could call Lee. When he didn’t answer the phone, I figured he was busy, but he called back and explained that he was with his parents. He sounded frustrated and I wondered if he’d mentioned me to his mom and dad.

They wouldn’t have taken that news kindly.

“I like Mr. Lee too.” Somi moves her fingers over the invisible piano.

“Yeah?” I resume combing her hair.

“I like him a lot.” She turns her head to pin those dark brown eyes—her father’s eyes—on me. “Can we see him more often?”

I blink rapidly, my brain skittering for an explanation. “He’s a very busy man, Somi.”

“But he doesn’t mind spending time with me.”

“Yes, but—”

“I want him to come to the Father-Daughter dance.”

My heart stops pumping blood for a minute. “Somi…”

“They asked me to play a piece for the show and I didn’t want to go because,” she scrunches her nose, “well, you know.
