There was a reason Alaric had been single as long as he had. He was hard. Demanding. A relationship with him wasn’t for the weak. Rush was perfect. Alaric felt raw. After cleaning Rush, he cuddled in next to him. Now he couldn’t stop kissing him in the dark.

“This was the perfect Christmas gift.”

He felt Rush shake with silent laughter. “This wasn’t your gift. I got you a box of those cigars you are always smoking outside my bedroom window.”

Alaric went still. Several thoughts hit at once. He didn’t know which one to say first. It seemed he should explain. There was no good excuse. The truth was, he was crazy. He didn’t want Rush to run, and he would when he figured that out, so he went with a different topic. “That’s one hell of an expensive gift.”

Rush shrugged. He stroked Alaric’s chest, playing with his chest hair and making Alaric’s eyelids heavy. “I know you and I know whatever you did for me for Christmas will be completely over the top. This way, I know I tried with what I have.”

That irritated Alaric a little. Not enough for him to move and lose Rush’s touch, but he couldn’t let the statement pass either. “We’re not competing. As I said, this was the perfect gift. I don’t want you to spend your money on me. I have money. What I don’t have is this.”

He felt Alaric smile against his chest. “Oh, boy. You must have one hell of a gift planned for me. How mad will I be?”

A smile snapped to Alaric’s lips. He felt like he had never smiled before Rush came along. Now the most ridiculous things brought him the most joy. He wanted to spoil the hell out of Rush. Rush deserved it.

“I just got you a nice bracelet.”

He felt Rush relax. “Oh. That doesn’t sound too bad.”

“I also had Chip take the title to the Navigator to the clerk’s office to register you as the vehicle’s new owner and add you to my insurance.”

Rush covered his eyes and took a tired-sounding breath.

Alaric waited for the explosion.

Instead, Rush blew out a sigh. “Yeah, that sounds about right. Now I have to figure out how to sign that back over to you.”

Alaric rolled, pinning Rush beneath him. Fury had all his exhaustion disappearing in an instant. “Take it back.”

“Alaric—”

“No. Take it back. I gave you a gift. Thank me and move on.”

“Why is this important to you?”

“Because you are, goddamn it. Now take it back.” Even Alaric couldn’t believe how enraged he sounded. He never lost his temper these days. Alaric prided himself on his control.

“Thank you, baby. Everything you do for me is beyond amazing. You blow me away. You’re right. It makes me feel like I can’t compete, but I shouldn’t be trying because this isn’t a competition.”

The tension drained from Alaric’s shoulders. He immediately felt like a monster for getting angry. His father got angry. Alaric wasn’t that man. “I’m sorry if I’m too much.
